Steering Rack Removal Help
How do I get the rack out of the car? I have everything unbolted and the rack is loose in it's space between the front crossmember and the body. I disconnected the A/C hoses to get a little more room there. I just can't seem to get it past the suspension crossmember and out. According to my factory service manual I should now be able to remove the rack thru the space between the crossmember and the body, but it seems too tight to fit. I don't want to damage the brake and fuel lines that go thru there.
Do I have to remove the front crossmember to get the rack out? Can I just loosen it and lower it about an inch on two hydraulic jacks? I really don't want to disassemble the entire front suspension and A-arms....I already replaced my bushings and set ride height, so don't want to have to do it over again. Anyone know how to get this thing out "relatively" easily? Heres a pic...I have the coupler disconnected completely and the plastic boot removed: ![]()

Here's a photo of the space that you are "supposed" to be able to get the rack thru.....any suggestions? The sway bar is not in the way, just shows up there w/ the angle of the photo. Note the brake line loop on the left side of the photo.

I don't think there are any secrets here. It's likely that removing the strut top nuts and loosening all the control arm bolts might be enough to wriggle it out. Just want to be sure you leave enough meat on the the control arm threads, dont want the whole thing coming down on your head. Good luck.

Oh and you probably should remove that 10mm bolt holding the fuel pump to the cross brace.

Got it out! I just backed off the two bolts holding the suspension crossmember, then used a pry bar to wedge it down about 3/4" (the bolts were still engaged, just backed off 3/4"). After that I was able to slip the rack out and clear the brake lines and fuel lines w/o damage.
+1 on not forgetting to loosen the fuel pump bushing bolt, would have broken it off for sure! Here's a pic of the rack out on the table, I cleaned it up a bit with some brake cleaner, next step is to disassemble, regrease and replace bearings. ![]()
