Question Advise Sought Re 6 x 9 '88 911 Rear Speakers

Is it possible to flush mount 6 x 9 speakers in a 1988 911.
I have the chance to acquire some NOS Jensen J3033 that have the nice flush speaker grill.
Will the speakers have enough room for mounting under the cutout in the parcel shelf .....

I think you'll find there is not enough depth to mount those speakers. Can't be more than a couple inches to work with. -J

I have 6 X 9's in the rear deck installed by I a PO and they stick up a few inches.

Do you have the original 4 X 6 with the original grilles?
I want to go back to original but cannot find the grilles.

Where are you located?

Some other thoughts:
Finally! 911 3.2 rear speaker replacement without any modification

I used Blaupunkt THx 462 and the grills look pretty stock. They fit the stock hole, 6x4. I don't think a 6x9 can fit without being proud of the deck.

Kenwood makes an unobtrusive, drop-in replacement. Ordered mine from Rod at Car audio innovations. Something like $100 shipped.

In my opinion, the rear deck speakers don't add a lot to sound quality because they fire into the rear glass and reflect. I know this because I'm stubborn and had to learn this lesson myself even though I got the same advice. Live and learn. I wouldn't worry to much about spending more $$$ than just a set of "good" speakers, unless you're getting a good deal. The larger speakers will be hard to fit though because there is very little depth. Some people have made spacers to get a little more depth and accommodate the larger speakers. That's a judgment call. I've seen some that look ok and some not so much.

FWIW, I decided to remove the rear shelf and do away with the rear speakers. Repaced with RS carpets when I redid the interior. I put 7.1" Hybrid Audio Technologies mids in the doors and mounted a set of tweeters in the aftermarket under dash panel.

You can't buy happiness, but you can buy car parts which is kind of the same thing.

I installed 5x7 in my Targa in the original location as the 4x6, the back deck was high enough and the speakers were low enough (about 2 1/4 inch high) which fitted perfectly. I gain a lot more bass and when combining the doors speakers it sounds really good. I think 6x9 would be cool if you can find a set that are really shallow or at least 2 1/8 inch in height. Also you can check for Retrosound speakers which make a really shallow 6x9's the depth mount is only 1 13/16 inch. If not check for spacers and top mount them but they may not look to good.

None. But depending where you watch the concert, the auditorium is as close to acoustically perfect as can be.

The interior of a Porsche? Not so much.

Just sayin...

I too will be looking for new speakers soon as I have a new interior coming with original rear shelf unmolested. The Retrosound speakers look as if they will do the job nicely just hope I dont have to butcher the shelf to make them fit as it has the grille incorporated into it.

compare the size of a 911 interior to that of a concert hall... front speakers are more than enough hell they are more than enough for just about anything on the road.

I used to think that the rear speakers didn't do much. I bought a decent Pioneer head unit, had Rod at Car innovations (terrific guy) install pricey component Hertz speakers up front and Blaupunkt stock looking in the back. No amp.

Four years later the front speakers are toast and rears are still going. Not great but I can still jam to Larry Coryell with the sunroof open on the freeway. I think the rears do add something to a challenging acoustic environment. I am glad I didn't ax them like I was thinking. Seems to fill in the sound when all 4 (or 6 if you have a later Carrera) are working.

I have Sony 6x9's in a custom back deck. They're very loud using just the power provided by my new Pioneer head unit. I have matching door speakers w/ separate tweeters but they're smaller so I fade it to the rear slightly because the 6x9's can handle more bass. The sound does bounce off the back glass some, but when I turn it up really loud it's not noticeable. Sorry but I do not know where the custom deck came from, the PO installed it. Looks simple though.

I don't recall the model number. If you look up what fits a 911 on Crutchfield they were one of the options. I bought them and sent them back for a refund. Tried some Polks and took them back too. I ended up with the Blau's mentioned earlier in the thread. They fit the best. Sound was ok. The problem I ran into was that they are silver and I found the reflection in the rearview mirror to be extremely distracting.

There just aren't a lot of great options in the stock opening. I think depth is the biggest issue.
