Longhood hot rod: what exterior/interior color combo?

I am embarking on a project build similar to my hot rod '72 sold 2 years ago

BaT Exclusive: Sinister 3.2L 1972 Porsche 911 For Sale

This new car is also a '72 sunroof coupe and was originally silver, and it needs a full paint job.

I personally have never liked silver. But am open to keeping the color. If so, I would go for a red or burgundy interior.

However, since this will be a hot rod, it will not be numbers matching, so I am asking for opinions on alternatives like

Slate Gray/red

Viper Green/tan

Oxford Blue/tan

Tangerine/black

Gray Beige/gray beige

...seen any combinations that blew you away?

Dispense with the cheeseball graphics and some of the red accents and this is a great color for a 911...

I have a Viper green 1970 targa and am doing a complete rebuild. Original color was Irish green. Can`t really say a restore because the color change would not be a restore.
After a year or so the Viper green just did not fit the car. I am looking at going slate gray and a light color interior. And am on the fence with NATO Olive.

The NATO olive might look better on newer cars but I might paint it that color and see. Can always go back to slate gray. Always thought slate gray was one of the best colors on early cars. Olive also.

A friend had a slate gray 911 and said it was one of the cars he had with the least speeding tickets. Said he thought it blended into the road color and did not stand out like other colors,

PS: He got lots of speeding tickets so there might be something to that, who knows.

Wow. I hadn't thought of GT3RS colors, but they do have some incredible combos.

This one was at RRIV:

Do you have an example pic of NATO Olive?

Incidentally, this was a Viper/tan car I built about 6 years back:

Tangerine/black - that way, the interior color change is easier. It's not as flashy, but it allows you to concentrate time/$$$ on the drivetrain.

If I was going to repaint my Carrera and redo the interior, I'd do Petrol Blue/Cork. I love that combination.

Of course, if you want to keep it stealthy, hard to beat Meteor Grey/black. :O

I like the wild period colors- Viper or Signal Green, Tangerine, one of the oddball blues...

And then maybe houndstooth

FWIW, the V. Green/tan didn't appeal; made the tan look orange. Your car, of course!

My humble opinion is that it is your car, you should consider painting it a color that you like, not what makes us happy. Unless your motivation for doing the backdate is resale. If that is the case, paint it White, Orange, Yellow or Viper Green.

IMO the Viper Greens, Oranges and Whites have been done to death already. If there is a different color that you like, do it!

My brother and I went against the norm when we backdated this '87 Carrera and redid it in the original Marine Blue color. Because we liked it.

Does it replicate one of the jellybean IROC colors? Nope. But you won't see another one like it at a Porsche gathering.

Here's the Before & After:

Heron grey with wine interior and green gauges.

My 73 is going back to Gemini Blue, no interior though.

I think a hot rod that goes the opposite direction from the in your face colors would be cool. I saw this butterscotch leather color and thought it would be very classy. It would work with just about any exterior color, but paired with a wine red, Aubergine, dark metallic green, or dark blue would be awesome.

Super input, guys. Jack, that color rocks. Will, that combo looks both rich and 'period correct.'

Luckily, because Porsche offered paint-to-sample and leather-to-sample, I have a lot of latitude.

This combination worked great for an 80 928, not sure how it would work for a longhood.

Long hood hot rod? I like the grey with red idea....but I'd use the cement grey on the new Scions. Saw one the other day in the flesh and the color really stands out. IIRC Porsche used something similar on the early cars.

You should post these on my "Where is the 928 pictures post" on the Pelican 928 forum. This is a sweet car.
