Any more planking pics?

Subaru-powered 912? Looks like there is plenty of room in there for a turbo! :)

Wrrnj 11-02-2012 06:27 PM

definitely enough room for a turbo. I contemplated the idea, but was worried about how much horsepower the 901 gear box could handle, besides the NA 2.5 makes about 200hp with the stinger ecm and pulls great off the bottom end, no turbo lag. It's pretty crazy how light the Subaru motor is compared to the 1.7 914 motor that was in the car when I got it. I plan to have it weighed soon just to confirm how much weight has been shed so far.

Oh Snap! :D

Check out subarugears.....

That's the route I have planned.

Subaru gearbox and motor :)

Can trim even more weight off car cause the modified transmission is supposed to weigh less then a 915.

Ya, I have heard of them. The $2275 conversion price tag on top of the trans cost is what kills that idea and I am not sure it would work with my SWB axles and flanges. I do love the idea though and bet it shifts great.

Just had the car weighed today at the dump scale (note sure how accurate it is)

Weight: 2080lbs

1967 912
full tank of gas
subaru EJ25
fiberglass bumpers
4 point roll bar
16" wheels
RS door panels and carpet
Three gauge dash
dash pad removed and using plastic cap only
radio and glove box removed
all ducting and wiper system removed

I am not sure if that is considered light or not, I thought the curb weight of a 912 was around 2200lbs, and I thought I removed more than 120lbs, maybe not. Would you guys consider 2080lbs to be light?

Very cool Hot Rod you've got there.

You have added weight back to car because of the bigger/heavier tires and wheels. If you weight them off the car you could post. also, it would be helpfull to see front axel weight and rear axel weight for sway/torsion bar size. good luck Henry

do you think the 15" steel wheels are lighter than the 16" mags? Less sidewall on the tires as well, but they are wider. I know the roll bar added another 40lbs too. Maybe I need to replace more panels with fiberglass.

It's not as light as 1800 lbs. :) but everything's relative. I'd say 2080 is pretty good. Do you have a target weight or will you ever be satisfied? As you might be aware, it gets increasingly more difficult and costly to continue the weight reduction scenario.

Blow through about 1/2 tank of gas and save 8 lbs/gallon., then subtract from 2080. The more fanatical among us might weigh theirs with only have 3 gallons of fuel and remove the spare, jack, handle and tool kit before weighing. Of course, all this weight savings can be offset by one's own set of personal baggage.

I'd say with that weight 19 and 23 anti rolls are overkill.

That would depend on the spring rates of the torsion bars and the application....

Please explain how a torsion bar (e.g. 23mm) can produce different spring rates on the same vehicle. Just curious.

They can't and I didn't suggest that they did......

You might want to look at the post I responded to again.
