10 digit vin code

HI: Any Idea how you check a 10 digit vin# code, all the sites seem to need 17 digits I was trying to use wpoaao plus the vin# but thats only 16,Is there a filler digit that needs to be in there some where. What happened was My brother bought this 77 911 wide body targa about 7 years ago and put it in storage.Unfortunately he became sick and never had a chance to work on it or anything. He passed away a few months ago,so I kind of inherited it.I can't seem to find any paper work on the car. No reg, title, bill of sale, nothing. I was hoping that one of the vin sites would give me some information, maybe a place to start. I asked at DMV. but they just chewed my head off. She was too busy on the phone. Any Ideas.I don't want to just cut it up and part it.Motor turns over and fires on starting fluid. Fuel pump seized, tank full of crud and rust. no body rust and body is in good shape other than needing paint, clear coat peeling. Before I put too much $$ into it I need to know if I can title it. Thanks Mike

Found this in a search. I hope it helps.
Simon's Porsche 911 SC Site
Best of luck.

someone who has the "Porsche 911 Red Book" by Patrick Paternie might respond if you post the VIN.

Are you trying to decode the VIN or are you trying to find if the VIN comes up stolen or otherwise clouded? I ask because my first reading of your post made me think you needed to decode the 10 digit VIN but upon re-reading, it seems like you want to "check a vin code" for some ownership problems. If you need a decoding site, try: Porsche 911 Fahrzeugidentifikation. If you need a site that will check ownership history, I'm sorry but I have no offerings.

Yeah! I need to find ownership history. 10 digit vins don't work with carfax type sites.

You should be able to find if it was EVER registered with the state by producing the vin # and some proof of ownership. If it was not regisitered then you need to follow the states' policy on getting a new title.

VINs became standardized in 1982. As such, carfax-type records only go back to then. Your dmv should be able to provide you with any history they have. If they have none, try calling dmvs in nearby states, or places you knew your brother lived, had friends in, etc. - wherever he might have found the car. I was able to do this with my car, and could trace its owners back to its arrival in Canada in the mid 80s.

Mike,

Check with the NYDMV or a tag service. In NY, you can apply for a title search using form MV15. This is available online if you go that route. You then may be able to apply for the title and have it transferred to you as a member of the your late brother's immediate family.

You might pay a fee for the tag service to help you, but they may know the ropes better than some DMV person who chews your head off (as you put it). There may be a more direct route. Here is one link: NYS DMV - Vehicle Registration - Title Certificates and Vehicle Ownership Good luck.

From the NY DMV:
If the title certificate is lost, use the instructions to apply for a duplicate title certificate in the name of the owner who died. Use the duplicate title certificate to transfer ownership.

OK! Thanks, it's a place to start. The car needs work but it is solid and no rust, just some surface rust on the doors, under carriage is solid no rust. Some one put some$$$ into the body kit,if it's a body kit. It looks like it could be factory but I doubt it. The engine has a Paxton super charger. Thanks Mike
