Got rear ended. few questions
Hello wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation as me, I was driving my 79 sc last night and a lady in a tahoe rear ended me. The car is damaged pretty bad, I am fine. I only have 2 pics of the car. my phone was almost dead and it is currently sitting at the tow yard. My question is, I highly doubt that this will be able to be fixed. If it is a total how is the value givin. The car is in great shape but by no means is it perfect. I have rebuilt the top end of the motor and replaced the clutch and done some transmission work. The paint is ok, it has a few cracks and such but overall looks great. Has anyone been though this and do you have any advice. The lady has really good insurance so I feel that I got lucky there but I love my car and dont want to get screwed. There is only one pic that I am able to load of it on the tow truck. I have also included a pic of before the wreck.

Sorry to read this, wow! That car looked amazing before the hit.... Glad you came out fine, but still, be sure to see a doctor...
Others will chime in with suggestions to you question. Just glad you walked away from the accident unharmed.

Looks like the Tahoe knocked the whale tail clean off.
Anything can be fixed with the cash+time formula. I would suggest that a full appraisal by your insurance adjuster be in order and also ensure that Tahoe-lady is indeed at fault and that her company will deal with your company. It is highly likely that it will be a write off though, so you have a chance to buy it from the insurance company with some of your pay out and then spend a whole bucket of wonga taking it back to how it was pre-tahoe. And yes, get to a Doctor to be checked out as you could have some Health problems as a result of the accident that are not completely apparent. If so, her company will cover the costs etc.... Lovely car and colour, worth keeping!! |

glad to hear that the ER visit turned out okay.
that really is too bad about the car, but as others have suggested, if you're willing to put in the time & money I'm sure it can be fixed. I understand the part of wanting another car, I from time to time think I'd like to replace my car with a dedicated track car. if you think you're ready, maybe now is a good time to move up to a newer car.

Was she on the phone? I'll pay her deductible if she wasn't.
If you do a search on this forum for "insurance", you'll find dozens of threads discussing your exact situation. |

I was rear-ended back in 1996 resulting in what looks like similar damage to your car. From my experience, I can tell you that the insurance company will try to get you to settle as quickly as they can and will obviously try to get you to take a little as possible. The adjuster who worked with me basically gave me the option of totalling the car and letting me buy it back, or coming in just under the amount to total it.
For me it ended up being better to come in just under what it would cost to total it (a little less money, but I didn't have to buy it back and it would have had a salvage title). The reality was that the damage to my car wasn't that bad, it was just that the adjuster was having to quote factory parts and go by a CPI book for the car's value, so those two factors made it easy to total the car. In the end, the money I got was enough to put flares on the car, fiberglass bumpers, etc. and get it painted. There may be a silver lining to your cloud...

That is not a difficult fix " it's everyday business
For a real shop . You don't want a total " And a buy back = salvage tittle . Find a good shop And you'll be driving again in a few weeks. Good time to delete rear bumper pads " looks better And as you can see. Just about useless. With the height Of all our cars . Good luck. Glad your not hurt |

Sorry for your car. Glad you're ok, it looked like a big hit.
I've been rear ended 3 times in my car but nothing like yours. The last time was really "minor" damage but I still had to fight for my car to not be totaled. Here are a couple pixs of my car from last time. The problem is the cost of parts are so expensive that repair costs go thru the roof quickly. Luckily the shop that fixed mine worked with the insurance company to keep the repair under the number for a total. My car is a 87 and they offered me $14K as the total value. They wanted to total it with a $9K rapair. This was a $9K repair if you can believe it. The part cost is huge so when you add up just a bumper, bumper shocks, muffler and oil cooler it's over a few thousand dollars. The flange on the muffler and oil cooler was the only "damage". I argued with the insurance adjuster that those part did not have to be replaced but he said by law he has to replace with new. I think the cost of a new muffler alone was over $3K. Unfortunately, I don't think there's any way your car will not be totaled. Unless you have an agreed value policy with your insurance company, you'll be in an uphill battle to get the insurance company to give you what you think your car is worth. ![]() ![]()

In a case like that let them total it and negotiate a buy price to keep the car if the numbers work. Fix it with used parts (or part it out) and you may end up with a profit if you do it right.. The rear of a 911, if the suspension isn't involved, is relatively easy to fix as it's nothing but sheet metal and a place to bolt the engine to. The yellow car will need some time on the frame machine by the looks of that door not closing..

wow that blows, glad you are ok.
Start by latest excellence valuations and cherry pick the good ebay sales,(log in and click completed listings to find the actual sales) you have to prepare for battle so to speak, and you will need all you can gather to prove actual value. I agree also that if you have the space and they offer a chassis buy back it may be worth your while to buy back and part, plenty of local guys could benefit I'm sure, as it looks like a nice one. Thank you guys very much. It's really funny this happened. About three months ago I got an entire 964 body kit with rear lights as well. I like the sc but have always liked the more modern looking Porsches. I'm really torn about repairing or totaling it and searching for a newer car. I have been searching values as I know it will be a battle with the insurance company. The door was very difficult to open but I was able to open it but I had to really slam it to close. I should hear from the insurance company by Tuesday and we will see what happens. Thanks again for all of your input.

I come so, so close to getting hammered like this about once a year. My insurance insisted that I get a professional evaluation (my $$) of the car when I acquired it. They then set the evaluation figure as the max they would pay in the event of a total loss. So, I have an agreed value - which includes a rebate to me of the sales tax I paid to buy the car. That's 15% up here, so it's not something to ignore.
Anyway, it may be too late for the OP, but I suggest to anyone to get an agreed value policy. I sleep better as a result. Edit: Yikes. Look at my post count number. . .
