2.7 CIS help needed... Car runs very bad all of a sudden..
4 weeks ago I drove the car, and it ran like it always did, super good.
I just got back from Norway and took the car out this morning after it stood still for a week or 3 - 4, the following happened..: Start with the hand throttle up. It started right away. I took off, and usually, the first few miles the car stutters and bucks a little bit.. I saw that the temperature didn't come up though on the temp gauge, and after those few miles, if I would close the hand throttle, the motor would die. It looks like it's running super rich on fuel, and if I get near 3000 rpm's it there's no power at all, and the motor does nothing but stuttering and bucking.. Around 2000 rpm's it runs, but not very well... When driving, if I close the hand throttle, the engine dies out if I keep the clutch engaged... Temperature gauge hardly comes up, or doesn't come up at all... What's going on here.....? Thermostat..? Cold start regulator..? Please help... Thanks!! |

I'd check to see that the plunger in the fuel distributor is free to move up and down. The old fuel may have varnished a little and the plunger is sticky. If it does not follow the throttle air flow plate, it will run rich. The other thing that could cause rich running would be a stuck or leaky cold start injector. But I'd check the fuel distributor plunger first.

Run some fuel treatment through the system. I like Techron and ATF (that's automatic transmission fluid, Dexron 3).

Take a pass through the ignition system too. Sitting for 3-4 weeks can cause condensation under distributor cap, gunked up points, plugwires, etc. Poor ignition will cause the symptoms you describe too.
I just went through this with my '74 too. -C
