MAF Survey

I'm considering a MAF for my 3.2. I think I've read all the posts on the subject and consequently do not expect a dramatic change. On the other hand, every bit helps.

Huntley, FVD and others offer these. I'd appreciate any comments from anyone who has bought one of these kits lately.

How was delievry/service, has the unit held up, any problems/hints with installation?

Huntley intrigues me for the tunability, but maybe its too many variables.

Sorry for the long post but I'm excited.

Paul

How do the MAF's boost hp? As I read your post, I realized I don't understand how they work.

Hello

Ok I wantet to boost up the post to be reviewed.

from german view some companys like Cartronic, Cargraphic or Lenztronic use a MAF system in conjunction with a optimized metalic carrier catyltyc converter and fresh MAPed brain will boost the original 231 ROW non cat high compression engines to over 245 HP.

The Cargraphic system is made as upgrade from the 217 Hp versions and will detune the 231 Hp engines to 225 Hp too.

( Sport Auto magazine testet a Lenztronic version some 6 years ago and that had over 255 HP calculatet back )

The Lenztronic unit is now over 10 years old and made to achive the E1 standards while cargraphic is a E2 version. Lenztronic is very expensive as they use the 993 catalyt and

Most people opt for that system es it adds more drivanility and the engine runs smother even with a lightwight flywheel.

The main problem is that the parts are a bit on the expensive side but the german tax system will pay back over several years if you convert the non catalyt to a catalyt car.

Right now Tobias Kindermann and Thomas Kirchhöfer ( from http://www.cartronic-motorsport.de/ ) are evaluating a new version who will run pollutionclass E2 wich is the actuall new car emission class for 15% from the cars sold in europe.

OK to give numbers a 3,2 non cat will cost you right now some 750 $/year. The Car version achiving the E1 class cost around 350 $/y and the E2 class costs 200 $/year.

More infos for german tounged or babelfishables

For a more English speaking focus

A while ago I scanned in an article from 911 & Porsche World:

scroll to the bottom - 6 pages in jpeg form (they are pretty big).

i like the look of the amd (uk) setup.

http://www.auto-amd.com/filmstar.asp

http://www.auto-amd.com/91132.asp

it plugs into the existing wiring harness and oe sockets, therefore no butchering! and easy to convert back to std.

i hope to use this system at some point and get around 245hp (at present 232hp).

i understand the main gain with MAF is improved throttle response.

I have been using the Huntley Racing MAF since last year and I am very pleased with it. Other modifications I have are a bored throttle body, boosted fuel pressure regulator (recommended), SSI's and performance exhaust. It does take some tinkering with a tech to max out the performance of the MAF but it is most common sense, akin to tuning carburators,(rich, engine bogs to lean and engine sputters, etc). You can tune this with the air/fuel ratio meter that comes with it. Once set, you basically leave it alone, unless you do other mods. I have done many modifications on my car, so it is hard to tell what performance gains I have. What I have noticed is that my fuel milage is improved. I also have an Autothority chip that was forcing my car to run rich and drink gas. I still have the chip but it is mostly bypassed by the HR MAF wiring. The acceleration is slightly improved below 4000 rpm, but it is hard to tell. From 4000 to 6000 at high speeds,(4th gear), the engine does pull strong all the way to redline. Prior to this, you would notice the peak hp falling slightly prior to redline. This system would by great for any car that, because of engine modifications, needs a way to have it run and idle smoothly. Downside is it took about 2 months to get it. Not sure how long it is know.
