I'm not Byron but I was at this race.

It was the 1973 Daytona 24. Porsche #59, 2.8 RSR, VIN 9113600328, overall winner by 22 laps (including pit stop to replace broken windshield), Driven by Peter Gregg and Hurley Haywood.

From what I recall reading somewhere: the glass was very thin lightwieght glass and actually cracked from wind pressure due to the high speeds.
That definitely looks like Gregg's profile driving in the top photo although I thought his helmet was white or silver with the stripes going around horizontally. I think it said "Gregg" between the stripes.

Terry, you are right about Peter Gregg's helmet, although perhaps not in this race since it was the very first race for Brumos in the white/red/blue livery. As you know, the former Brumos racing color was tangerine (blutorange) with a white circular background for the number. From the color picture it appears that the helmet may have been painted to match the older car.

The 1973 Daytona 24 was my first, and it was really something. All the prototypes failed to finish and the Brumos car was fast and very consistent. It rained during the night and Hurley Haywood drove very aggressively when others were tip-toeing around. Back then, many of the GT cars were privateers with amateur drivers and the Brumos guys were experienced pros.

I took several 35mm slides in the pits and garage area before the race and some B&W closeups of the car when it was sitting in the Brumos showroom in the days following the race, before the car was shipped back to Germany. This #59 was actually a factory owned and prepared car, as was the blue #6 Sunoco Porsche that was entered by Penske. I need to get a scanner so I can post some of them.

Here is another picture I found online of the 59 car taken late in the race showing the damage on the left side from a shunt with a slower GT car.
