Backdating side mirrors

I have a 72 that the previous owner updated to newer style power flag mirrors . I want to go back to more stock chrome style, but am worried the base of the newer style flags will have left some marks that will be visible when I install something with a smaller base. Any ideas?

You are correct that the later style mirrors will leave their mark--namely holes in the door skin. I know of no way to install a period correct 72 mirror without first welding shut the holes left by the flag mirrors. It may be possible to find a thin plastic/rubber base to place under the correct mirror to cover the parts of the holes that are exposed but I don't know the pattern nor sizes of the holes to know if that would work. I know there are threads which show the mounting holes for flag mirrors so you may be able to figure something that will hide the old holes without doing the full welding patch.

Bummer, I figured as much, but I really hate the look of these flags! The paint is way too nice to start messing with welding and reprinting, so I'm going to have to look at something that covers the holes. Maybe there is another type of chrome mirror that has a larger base out there somewhere? I don't care about it being correct, just want it to look old and classic.

Do a search here for the Sebring mirror conversion that has been done, using the flag mirror bases. The Sebring is available in chrome and though "race" looking , may suit your style

End result is no welding or painting needed

Here is a reasonably elegant solution if you don't want to weld the holes up. Just fabricate a bigger gasket.

Want to replace my sideview mirrors
