SSI's and test pipe
I have a '81 911SC. I have been considering upgrading the exhaust to SSI's. All these conversions I assume remove the catalytic converter. I live in a smog area and the cat is required. Has anyone done this mod with a test pipe that can be pulled and the cat reinstalled relatively easy?

The SSI's don't have cats, testpipes, or the place for them. They shoot straight out the back, into a dual inlet muffler, and right back out. No room for a cat. I too live in a smog area, so here is what I did (with the help and patience of a friend who works at Midas). I installed the SSI's, then we built my "everyday exhaust"; a pair of Supertrapps. We then took off the Supertrapps and built a really crude but sufficient system where the two exchangers bend to the driver side, about where the stock cat exited. They then join together and into an aftermarket 2.5" cat. Then out the back of the cat (the front of the car) the pipe snakes back again to the rear of the car and into a single in, single out cheap muffler, then out a tailpipe. HP loss, about 50% (hehehe), butt ugly, a ton of piping, but more importantly IT IS LEGAL! And it requires me to only pull the muffler every two years, not the whole exhaust system and oil lines! So for one day it will work, then I put the Supertrapps right back on. A shop would probably want $300+ to make this setup (very time consuming), but it is the only option I saw for the majority of us whom are emission restricted.

Hey Colby, that is pretty smart. Would love to see the pictures.
Maybe I can borrow that setup from you once every two years?

Hehehe, I can just imagine the shipping costs on that one. Do we have to pay the Worker's Comp bill when the UPS guy throws out this back? Hehehe, actually anyone in the Indiana area is welcome to use it if they come and get it!

Interesting!
Say, island911...if we all ask nicely, would you use Solidworks to design a system for us? I'd try it, but I haven't paid them a dime (yet), and wouldn't know what I was doing anyway! ![]() ------------------ '81 SC Coupe (aka: "Blue Bomber") Canada West Region PCA The Blue Bomber's Website |

Every trusted mechanic I have heard on this issue, including John Walker I believe, say that a properly tuned SC does not need a CAT to pass emissions (visual notwithstanding). So, the SSIs should work by themselves. Unless the better flow disallows the proper tuning. In which case, inserting a choke of some kind between the exchangers and muffler might increase backpressure sufficiently.
Whaddya think? I never studied at MIT. ------------------ '83 SC |
