Anyone know of any G50 gearbox overhaul videos online?
Anyone know of any links for G50 rebuild videos? I can find plenty of 901 and 915 transmission rebuild videos, but no luck on any detailed G50 boxes.
I am mainly stuck on trying to pull gears off the shaft while the two shafts are still together. I have lots of pullers, but cant find anything tough enough that will allow me to pull them apart and not possibly damage the gears. Cant use a press with the shafts still next to each other either. Any video advice would be helpful. The service manual is just like" just pull the gears off the shaft!" I respond that I have already put a lot of heat to the gear and it doesn't budge! Thank you.

No one. Even still pics would be helpful. Lots of 915 gearbox videos out there. I don't see anything about the G50 gearboxes.

The reason they don't exist is that it is a pretty difficult gearbox to rebuild and takes a number of special tools. People have tried to make the tools themselves in the past and just messed up their gearboxes. It cost less to pay someone who owns the tools than to replace the parts you break as you figure it out.
There aren't shortcuts. But there are one or two threads here on pelican from people who have done it. I've never seen any on any of the other boards. Regards, Matt Monson Guard Transmission llc |

I will disagree with Matt. It's not a lot harder that a 915. It's not rocket science.
You need a press, and some long-ish gear pullers. The Porsche manual has a G-50 chapter.

Hi Matt.
Thanks for the concern. I am a pretty apt mechanic and read and understand the manuals and have done probably 60-70 transmissions over the years. Not hundreds or thousands like you guys, but I am a solid wrench. Matt your or anyone have an idea on the links you spoke of? I have done a lot of transmissions, I think that I just need a wicked long puller, honestly. Transmission ran good, but would have a little bit of notchy shifting on occassion. I have the manuals for the 964 and 993. Not really that great. about gear removals. I have presses and tons of pullers. I will buy any tools needed. I have all the factory tools for 901 915 gear boxes, but didn't realize that many specialty tools might be needed. Just stuck on trying to release the first gear on the shaft. I heat it and put a tough puller on it. I just don't want to break anything.

Not an expert here, but isn't first gear part of the main shaft on some G-50's?

There is a first gear on the input shaft and the counter shaft.
BTW, I got the gears separated. I talked to the GREAT PEOPLE AT GBOX and they informed me that I was wasting my time following the Porsche recommended procedure with a puller. They told me to make a hollow cylinder about six inches long and place it under the main pinion bearing and press the bearings and gears off the pinion shaft. Dead on. At about 7 tons of force, the pinion moved and all the parts started coming off with less force every press of the jack. Great advice from the THE GUYS AT GBOX. Not the first time either, that they have helped me out. Very honest and helpful and they never even charge me to extremely valuable information. I have to find more to buy from them and I would even pay more if they wanted me to. Thank you.
