1988 911 Speakers

Redoing Interior on 88' 911. I am trying to determine if there was an option for a separate tweeter in the door panels, or if mine were added later. Does anyone know ?

SOP, inclusive of crossovers, plastic "boxes" mounted in the front of the door pockets.

They included tweeters as far as I know. Perhaps special editions like the CS models didn't, but I'm pretty sure the tweets were there on most. Deciding whether or not yours are stock would require a picture.

Sounds like a later addition. You could verify this by removing the speakers and looking at the upholstery work. Does the opening in the door panel look finished to Porsche standards?

If you are getting rid of the original speaker covers, I would be interested in the rear covers even if they are cracked. I'm going to try and start manufacturing these out of cast aluminum and need a set to use as original templates. send me a PM if your interested in selling them. Should look similsar to this:

They were part of an upgraded speaker package that was made available at some point during the 3.2 era. I think the option was called the Hi Fi Sound Package, or something like that.

I also have an '88 with separate tweeter openings in the door panel. The option for this might be: 490 Hi-Fi sound system
(There are various audio option codes here)

The option code for this might be a red herring, as earlier cars with single door speakers likely use this code. My car has a tweeter opening and the 490 option.

I have not seen these from the factory on earlier cars, and I am pretty sure that the separate tweeters were only available from the factory for the 88-89 model years (excluding the speedster and Club Sport, which had a manual window crank in place of the tweeter). A look at of the ebay listings shows cars that are completely consistent with my understanding (although it doesn't necessarily confirm it). In fact, every non CS/Speedster 88-89 on ebay has tweeter openings, and everything earlier has a single speaker opening.

The 1988 Commemorative Edition has the separate tweeter grill but no tweeter behind it and has the factory cover behind the grill. I replaced/upgraded all my speakers and found ones that had to fit in and under the stock grill locations.

although my '86 was delivered without door tweeters, there was a hole in the door panel cardboard to accommodate a tweeter
