Had my fender rolled today - by a GARBAGE TRUCK

I played cat-and-mouse with a garbage truck in heavy traffic today. My mistake for not realizing everyone doesn't love my car as much as I do.

While attempting to make a right-on-red in heavy traffic, a gap opened as a huge garbage truck attempted to accelerate with the rest of the pack. He couldn't close the gap, so I shot it and took my place in his lane. Unfortunately, I didn't fit all the way in as traffic was stalled, and my left rear tail was still sticking out (not in traffic, however). The garbage truck driver decided to prove to me who was larger (and teach me a lesson), so he drove into me. Seriously. HE DROVE INTO ME. I was stopped still, and he deliberately rolled into me. I was a 3,000 lb. wheel chock for a 50,000 lb beast.

I climbed out of my car and looked up to him in his cab (10' off the ground!). He smiled and shrugged his shoulders. He didn't say a word as I took his insurance information. I crawled back into my car and limped home embarassed about my first 'accident' in nearly 18 years!

The tally: My left rear quarterpanel is damaged ($500-1000), and my left rear wheel is scratched (damage ?). His truck didn't have a scratch (what did you expect?).

Lesson learned: Don't give anyone the opportunity to mess up your baby, you may be shocked when they actually take you up on the offer!

Jesus...

That's gotta hurt. I recently experienced the same thing, but it was due to incompetence on the part of other drivers, not pure spite!

I was able to keep my cool when it happened, mainly because the girl who hit me was so mortified by the carnage she'd caused, but if I knew it was done on purpose, by some garbageman driving a city-insured car, I would have gone right off the deep end. Straight-jacket time...

I remember reading you post just the other day... Sorry to hear about your loss.

About going off the deep end... I am 6'3" 180 lbs. and was wearing a nice suit. He was 6'3" 300 lbs. wearing 'garbage man' attire and looking the part (dirty, muscular, and asset-lacking - if you know what I mean). I was in disbelief - how could someone be so stupid?

He will tell his supervisor that he nicked a car. No big deal. I will lose my car to a bodyshop for many days, and live through the pain and suffering knowing my car has been damaged.

I did not get a police report - damage was too minor, and there were no injuries. In hindsight, maybe I should have.

Hi Adam,

I am having visions of you getting out of a red Porsche cabriolet and going ape-*****-banana-spastic on the afore mentioned 6'3", 300lb WWF imposter.

This is going to make the 5 o'clock news.

Cheers, VC

Yikes. If that is the only damage then you probably got out of there lucky. Thankfully you were OK.

Gives new meaning to the term fender rolling, no?

I go through the same crap everytime I drive my car. Everyone wants to f*** with you. Honda, Toyotas, Mustangs, Camaros, Buicks, etc. I don't think that they necessarily hate the car, they just want to see it in action. Do like I do, just ignore them and drive on. I know it's hard to do sometimes, but it's not worth getting a ticket or, in your case, damaging your car.

Folks:

Is everyone carrying a disposable camera in their glovebox/sidpockets? You gotta get out of the car and snap those pics ASAP before anyone moves their car. The pics are not legal in a court of law, but can get you a-ways down the road when folks start backing away from their responsibilities after the fact.

This was one of the first days I had ever driven the Porsche to work. My 'commute car' has my digital camera in it - you can imagine I was banging my head on the dash when I realized that!

I agree, a camera would have been priceless at the time.

Angry Back off!

Bugger fitting a rear brake light! I gonna mount a 300 watt sodium vapour spot light to the rear deck lid and burn the brat that tails me the next time.
Don't they know my heart n' soul are back there.

Very good idea! And those pics are legal in a court of law. You just have to lay the proper foundation to get them in. Which is very simple, you just have to testify that the pictures are an accurate representation of the position of the vehicles at the time of the accident.

Brother is a Sheriff. ALWAYS call the cops and have a police report filed. If you did not, call them and file one on the phone (in FL I think you have 24 hours).

I made this mistake once and for a while was questionable whether the other drivers insurance company was going to pay for the damage because the other driver was trying to ignore it.

I like the camera in the car for the just in case. Kurt B might skip this as he had dumped everything in his P car for weight saving! just kidding

Due to such unwarranted attention...by almost every four wheel vehicle I painted the 930 black...synonomous with Earnhardt #3 in this part of Nascar country and it helped...Guards red was just too much, it seemed. However, I have had two "birds" shot my way in the past week by very slow drivers! and I was just minding my own business?

You always lose with the violence option. Believe me.

A couple years ago a nice looking elderly gent in a Toyota Avalon was not letting me merge when I was on my motorcycle with a passenger on the back. He just wasn't letting me in, even though it was my right of way. When I began to accelerate to pass the car ahead of him to get in, HE PURPOSEFULLY RAMMED ME. We were going so slowly that nothing really happened. No damage, no injuries. But both me and my passenger were so incensed, we parked the bike in front of him and started haranguing the guy. He was so scared he wouldnt' even look at us.. two beserking, yelling guys in black leather. So I kicked his mirror clean off his car. It was a glorious move, felt good, and he deserved it. But he filed a police report and my insurance got nicked. I still pay for that while nothing happened to him. HE RAMMED ME ON PURPOSE, folks. He could've killed us, but he didn't.

Anyway, I still have revenge fantasies, but now they revolve around neck braces and punitive damages for deep old man pockets. Keep your thinking cap on and the anger in check!

Cheers,
