1990 911 stuck in reverse

Please hit me with some ideas.
I backed out of a parking stall and when I shifted in 1st gear and let the clutch out it killed the engine. Even in neutral the transmission is stuck in reverse.
I'm thinking the shift fork may have sheered it's roll pin, is that a possibility?

I've been reading about the reverse light switch. I think I will start there.

A 1990 911 has a G50 transmission. I doubt that it is the same situation as in the earlier 915s, which is the ones with the pin under the reverse light switch.

Welcome to the club... I have a 1991 C4 Cabriolet that suffered the same problem. One day I was driving normally to work and when I got out to head back home I could not shift it.... Lucky for me, it got stock in second and I was able to drive it home. I thought it was the bushings on the shift linkage but not the problem... Car is parked until I have time to drop engine and tranny to check in more detail. Let us know what you find.

Here is my post when it happened:

Shift linkage bushing - Rennlist Discussion Forums

Sorry, did not mean to scare you... could be as easy as the bushings going bad. Here is what I did to a friends car that was having problems shifting into reverse... hope is as simply as buying the bushings from our host, replacing those, and getting the car back on the road. Thread was from 2009...

Unable or very difficult to get into reverse and a few of the gears....

Transmission is fine. Transmission mount looked fine. Engine mounts are shot but not the culprit...

So I am thinking that this must be part #26 on the diagram... since when they go bad they give this type of behavior... inexpensive parts that I can order from the local dealer... So I order 2 #26 and, since I am there, why not change the 4 #6 bushings as well.

http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/shifter_diagram.jpg

I get to work, take everything apart and see that the condition of #26 is normal.

rear:

So I take off the two covers (front and back) to check the condition of the shift linkage. Turns out the rear bushings in the universal joint are toast (at least one is)... I can't find a replacement part number for it... and it would be a sin if the whole linkage needs to be replace for this...

Plus the way the bushings are inserted I have no idea how that pin is removed... the bushings are installed from the inside and the pin does not look like it can be pushed out.

Anyone knows of a replacement bushing available for this?? Thank you.

Oh! Forgot to mention... the fun part was that my son (6 year old) helped getting all the 10mm nuts and bolts off the bottom covers. I should have taken photos of him doing the work... safety glasses, apron (the one they get a Lowes when they do their projects), and used his own tool box... woohoo!

Wow... that was when I had the mid-rise lift...

What is strange is that this car is still using the 915 universal joint rather than the later style... in Porsche nothing goes to waste I guess...

This is the other style (photo from Ken964). This one is closer to what the PET shows:

While in there, replaced both shift linkage ball cup bushings, part #928-116-145-03, available from our host (Pelican). Here are more old post from when I was troubleshooting my '91

Read up on the transmission reverse detent. I read my old receipts and talked to all the previous owners and one of the physicians that owned it said it got stuck and he had to drive backwards for four miles.

Had to pull trans - I hope I remember that correctly. Was nowhere rebuild cost but there is labor with pulling it.

Is that specific to the 915 transmissions? or G50 suffer from that as well? In my case it is not stock in reverse... only goes into 2nd and 4th, with lots of effort...

Anyway... did not mean to hijack the thread. Back to normal programming.

Link is very helpful. Kind of looks like the reverse light switch and reverse detent are the same thing???

Maybe the transmission removal I was thinking of was just simply "Porsche tax" from having the repair done at the dealer and the cost was several hundred dollars for replacing the pin and switch. Don't know for sure. Would have to re-visit the receipts.
