Shift linkage bushing??

Hello everyone.

Helping a friend with his car.

Unable or very difficult to get into reverse and a few of the gears....

Transmission is fine. Transmission mount looked fine. Engine mounts are shot but not the culprit...

So I am thinking that this must be part #26 on the diagram... since when they go bad they give this type of behavior... inexpensive parts that I can order from the local dealer... So I order 2 #26 and, since I am there, why not change the 4 #6 bushings as well.

I get to work, take everything apart and see that the condition of #26 is normal.

front:

rear:

So I take off the two covers (front and back) to check the condition of the shift linkage. Turns out the rear bushings in the universal joint are toast (at least one is)... I can't find a replacement part number for it... and it would be a sin if the whole linkage needs to be replace for this...

Plus the way the bushings are inserted I have no idea how that pin is removed... the bushings are installed from the inside and the pin does not look like it can be pushed out.

Anyone knows of a replacement bushing available for this?? Thank you.

Oh! Forgot to mention... the fun part was that my son (6 year old) helped getting all the 10mm nuts and bolts off the bottom covers. I should have taken photos of him doing the work... safety glasses, apron (the one they get a Lowes when they do their projects), and used his own tool box... woohoo!

Does not look like the one in the diagram but it is the stock unit. It does have that bolt you see at the end (#13, #14) that holds it to the transmission shifting shaft.

There has to be a way to replace just the bushing...

For 915 you can buy the bushings from Pelican P. (I bought it years ago) just to discover that you need a press to put them in so I replaced the coupler from one I found in the junkyard in good condition and the 915 shifted like new (the tranny was rebuilt too).

Here are some pictures that may be out of context because its for a 915 but just as reference and look the one
that was on my SC has the same stamp as your 964! "00 EK2" meaning you can buy the bushings for our Pelican P: http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/911M/POR_911M_Tshift_pg1.htm#item0

The ultimate bushings are the brass ones: 915 Shifter Maintenance and the Perils of Procrastination

Thumbs up

That is it!!! Thank you!!! I will look for it in the 915 part catalog.

So you are saying that that middle pin comes out with a press? I will get the the part out and see if I can press that pin out to get it ready for when the bushings get here.

Thank you again!

I just updated the post with a link to another thread with more info.
Yes you need a press to push the pin out. I tried with just a bench vise and a BFH and basically destroyed the joint because its soft metal.

Good luck!

Thank you! Order place with Pelican for the bushings. I ordered an additional set to keep as spare in case I run into the same issue with my 964.

Thank you Oracle!

Wachuko,
I have a left side (driver's) engine mount that will fit this car if you need it. I bought it for $50 and that is good enough for me. It is like new.

Thanks,
Mark
