Are these "S" front calipers?...

Would these be "S"? The strut spacing is 3.5" and they're aluminum I think. The struts were painted green by previous owner, but they're actually Boge. My COA shows: "Option Group G03" and "Comfort Equipment" among others... not sure what's in either one.

thanks,

kj

Thank you.... talk about dumb luck - didn't know it when I bought the car. I've been scrolling through the search files and it started me thinking about possibly getting the brakes upgraded and I had noticed the nice offerings from Eric and was thinking about it (I'm an autocrosser and always look for a little here and a little there...) - but thought I ought to quantify what I had first. Now - I think I'll let it ride. I'm still adjusting to how much force I need to use to get me slowed down sometimes... mainly a different feel I suppose (brakes aren't spongy).

I got the magnifying glass out and tried to jot down numbers, etc. and had noticed inside the little box in the lower portion of picture #2 that it has "72" stamped in it. When you say a 72+, does that indicate a change occured? If so, can you expand on the difference from an earlier caliper?

thank you for the responses,

kj

As far as I know earlier calipers have an external solid line to bring the oil from one half of the caliper to the other half. My 71 S-calipers are that way.
Here is an image of the earlier calipers from PMB

All S-Calipers have those compensating lines. Early as shown above are off the original 908 caliper casting. The later models incorporated a more rounded nose similar to what is seen on even earlier 910 calipers. The later calipers also went to a dichromate finish over top the anodizing where as the early calipers were just clear anodized.

Both have 48mm pistons and take the same pads. The pistons "always" fail. The steel on aluminum issue was handled back in the day with a nickel plating and it flakes on the original pistons right at the bore seal. That's why we developed the DuroAno pistons sold here.
