quick answer - the general public

The point is not whether rain will harm your car. If my Porsche was my daily driver, then rain would not be an issue. However it is not my daily driver. The reason I don't drive in the rain or snow is that the probability of accidents from others is higher during those periods. Many don't have tight suspensions, good tires, or good judgement when it comes to reducing speed during conditions when traction is reduced. I see no need to increase the risk of damage if I don't have to.

This rather than any concern over water damage is the reason my car stays garaged during inclement weather. My car has seen rain maybe 5 times in 19 years.

FORTUNITLY IN KANSAS I CAN DRIVE UP TO MY INSURANCE,S
LIMIT OF 5000 MILES A YEAR AND NEVER GET WET . IN FACT
I DON,T EVEN WASH THE THING JUST WIPE IF OFF WITH A DAMP TOWEL AND WHEN THE SWIRLS START TO SHOW TIME TO POLISH
GLAZE AND WAX. RED LINE AT LEAST ONCE A DRIVE AND NEVER
DO LESS THAN A TWENTY MILE TRIP.

Just wondering..

Is there a difference between the h2O you wash your car with and rain h2O ? So why not drive in the rain ?? I really don't quite "get it", I see ads for cars that say , "never driven in the rain"...how does h2O devalue a Porsche??

Hellgate 06-21-2002 12:54 PM

It rains all the time in Germany. In the summer of '85 it rained 21 days straight in the Wuerzberg area. Yuck. That summer I did not not have a roof over my head either.

As long as you wash the road funk off your car will be fine. About the only thing that rain can to your car is increase the likelyhood of an accident. In Phoenix during the monsoon season you will hear sirens after the rains stops, the blue-hairs can't deal with it.

speeder 06-21-2002 01:06 PM

Curt, Yeah, there is a difference. Rain is soft H2O, (harmless), and the stuff in the hose, at least here in L.A., is hard as a rock. As in, "better chamois it off quick, unless you want white spots all over your car."

Doesn't make much sense, I agree.

Wow!! I love to play in the rain..My car is not a daily driver but something about rain and P-cars..Especially the first rain of the season what a friggin blast!
I have to admit.. I do wipe her off once she's back in the garage..

On the pre-galvanized bodies such as my 72 T, rain had a nasty habit of finding weak spots in your car's paint job. and accelerating the activities of the tinworm. Since my recent paint job I have worried about this less. Once rust begins on the old cars it never goes away.

Rain is not a big problem. Salt covered roads are the killer around here. From the first sign of snow to the well after the last, the roads have a fine dust of salt that clings to all the metal surfaces underneath your car. I think the rain issue is more having a clean car then doing damage. If I want it to rain that day, I make sure my car is freshly waxed!

Glasgow 911SC 06-22-2002 04:44 AM

I don't take my car out in the sun!!!!! Fair enough, we don't get any sun here, but if we did, I would make a point of never going out in it!:D :D

Why do I try to avoid rain driving? Because the older I get, the less fun it is to put the car up on jackstands and wash her bottom. True, it's NOT a daily driver. Believe me, as a 35 year member of PCA, I've been there and done that with P car as a daily driver. These days, I'd rather have my lesser iron fight the parking lot wars...Now if I had a "lesser" Porsche, an SC, late 80's Carrera, something like that, a car easily replaced, my attitude might be different. ;)

ScotMcLean 06-22-2002 09:48 AM

What is rain? 108 degrees last week in Yuma, Arizona. Scott

curtisaa 06-22-2002 09:50 AM

Fire and Rain..

Hey Scott, bet you'd rather have that rain VS the raging fires....

ScotMcLean 06-22-2002 10:04 AM

You bet! - a lot of people are working hard on it and there is no end in sight. Crews from all over the state are on it.

The winds get pretty strong and when you leave an air-conditioned building it feels like you entered an oven.

July will see temps over 120 easy. I have to feed the rubber seals with glycerine and run fans in the garage. Scott

rain

If you live in the Great Northwest and you love Porsches....you get wet. BUT you never wear out your tires if you stay in the wet...and I think my car makes more power in the rain. See how I have rationalized this....it makes perfect sense

curtisaa 06-22-2002 02:03 PM

Yikes...

..it was just a matter of minutes before 89911's comment would be coming. I'm sure Paul said it being felicitous...RIGHT PAUL ??

under wash trick

Haven't tried it, but you can run the car back and forth under a sprinker hose. The key is to get off the salts that cause the rust.

Personally, I don't drive in the rain, therefore, I'm a big fan of www.weather.com.

Rain

Both of my P cars are in the 30 year old, no bodywork, no rust, and NO RUSTPROOFING category. So, I do not drive in rain, or even if it looks like rain. My targa top is permanently mounted on the garage wall, and the wipers go on once a year for the safety inspection, then back in the boot they go....
When I sold my no bodywork, no rust 69 targa to a guy from Florida last year,I indoctrinated him in the same drill. Also taught him how to wash the car without filling all body cavities with H2O. I.m sure none of you guys would do that, either, right?

Brian993 06-22-2002 07:04 PM

I drove my car in the rain today (10 year corrosion warranty). I spent two hours detailing the exterior Friday evening. Now its a mess again. Oh well I guess I will have to buff it up again, my wife calls it "making love to the car". I would have to agree. If the car stayed clean all the time half my fun would be gone.
