My '82 is has been driven on a "semi-daily driver" basis. Rain or shine. PWD72s, what the h*ll do you mean by "lesser Porsche"?

Ahhh Geeze...I was trying to be funny??? Evidently, I failed...Guess I have to take lessons from Leland....I mean, he can write about cars being inferior to the SC, and we all know he's joking. Or is he???? ;)

Wow, quite the spam-storm I started....

Good I thought I was missing something, yes I understand the cleaning, potential for rust, and concours quality.

Each to their own, but the dust I get on the car makes me wash it weekly (I like to), and I do as others believe the "tap" water has alot more harmful minerals than the rain, and here the salt left over on the roads is still around for a few rain storms, and mine isn't any show car, so I drive her.

As far as
"Because the older I get, the less fun it is to put the car up on jackstands and wash her bottom."
What the hell is that??

Thanks for the funny responses...:)

Rain water is not always harmless. In some parts of the country, industrial pollutants in the air become part of the rain water to produce acid rain. Left on paint or other surfaces, the H20 tinged with industrial acids can pit paint and metal surfaces. It's best to wash off rain water with regular tap water.

New car paint is especially susceptible to acid rain, rail dust, salt spray, bug juice, bird turds and other nasty contaminants as it travels from the factory to dealer, so they take extraordinary care in protecting the paint finish. This saves the manufacturer/dealer from potential customer complaints and the extra time and money in detailing or repainting a "brand new" car.

There are some ordinary Pcar folks, not even the extra-anal concours types, who never allow water spray to touch their car. I think this is going too far, but if these wheels aren't driven too often, perhaps trapped moisture in their garage queens might be of some long term concern.

I drove my leaky BMW 2002 in the rain every day. I drove my really, really leaky Lotus Europa in the rain whenever it would start. And I certainly drive my 72 in the rain.

Were it not for the small leak in my door seals I would wish it to rain at least once a day. In fact, if it goes more than a week with out rain I start to contemplate mounting a set of narrow/hard tires just so I can enjoy the dive more.

I don't know anything about driving modern P-cars...but there is a difference between handling and mechanical grip. My 72 (like the BMW and the Lotus) don’t have much in the way of the latter so its fun to exploit the former whenever you can.
