Question Throw Out bearing play? Feels loose?! Normal?

So I'm in the middle of engine drop to continue searching for the mysterious clicking/whining noise coming from under my SC. In addition to an oil leak repair quest, rear bearing R&R etc. You've seen the threads

I just separated the trans from the engine. Oily greasy mess inside of the tranny where it mounts around the fly wheel and clutch assembly...

My question: the TO bearing feels loose... It has axial and lateral play, is this normal/ok? It was replaced when I had my clutch serviced < 20k miles ago

Could this be part of the noise that started as a distant moaning, then subtle clicking (like a bad cv joint) then all out whining like bad bearing about to let loose.

Again, the sound goes away when coasting with the clutch pedal depressed, and returns when in gear and under power, any speed, changes pitch with speed but not related to engine rpm...

Do I need to replace?

Basically I grab the TO bearing as it sits insitu and can wiggle it up and down. Left and right few mm.

I'll try to post video...

What happens when you spin it, does it spin like a top, if so, replace, heck it's out so I would replace anyways. Something is shooting oil, what does the RMS look like and is it low on tranny fluid?

It spins like a skateboard wheel. Is that bad?
The oil everywhere is from the unholy trio literally spewing oil down into the bell housing.

How is the TO bearing supposed to spin? With tight resistance like a new bearing would?

TIA

It's normal for the TO bearing to move around laterally (up/down, side to side) in the PP. This is not play in the bearing itself, just movement in the PP. A bad TO bearing usually makes noise when the clutch is depressed, not engaged.

T/O bearing will spin freely like a skateboard wheel just like you say. A new one spins a bit less freely. But once it gets some use & heat in it, it spins quickly

I think you want to take a look at your guide tube seal. Take a smell inside that bellhousing and see if it stinks like gear oil.

The T/O bearing does always have a little bit of lateral play to it. The retaining spring on the back side of the clutch fingers is a rather thin disc spring. So it doesn't have a lot of force applied to the bearing to fix it in place.

Ok, checked smell of greasy oil in bell housing. Smells more like gear oil then motor oil.

I only recently switched from SWEPCO to Dino oil but either way looks like I'm replacing guide tube seal and O ring...

Sounds like my 15-20k mi TO bearing is ok?

I will R&R guide tube and follow Wayne's book on dressing it with grease before mating the engine and trans back together.

My shift fork was replaced when the clutch was done <20k miles ago and after inspection looks to be holding up well...

Any other observations before I proceed?

TIA!

While you are there, are you taking the PP out and check the clutch disk?
Abnormal wear would indicate an issue that you can address easily before putting the engine back in the car.
