what do these wires go to?

Trying to figure out why my brake lights don't work and came across these dangling in the engine compartment.

They may be the wires that go to the rear window defroster.

Good eye, Brian. The pic is not that clear as to where the wires originate but now I see the heavily electrically taped cluster-fark of a connection.

My 81 has one red with white stripe and one red with black wire. They are chubby but not as chubby as in the pic. Looks like an attempted fix gone wrong.

scyzygy - I would set that project aside. Two wires are all that feed into the rear window defrost. Looks like you have three?

Re barke lights: See my post - #7 & 8 that 'splain the pin out connectors for the rear lights. Get a multi meter and get down with your bad self.

Rear window defoger connector M/Y 86

Here's the connector wiring and function(s):

I made this up a while back when evaluating an element issue.

Should be close to your M/Y.

Good luck,

Gerry

Thanks, the only reason I knew was when I re-wired my engine compartment the rear de-fog wires never made it back.

And here, according to a contact I have with Hella, is how the rear defogger works.

Unlike the 993 cars, there is no time-out, and is a voltage parameter dependent system.

Thanks

There are only 2 wires in that bundle.

I got a mutimeter today and checked the fuse in the trunk - it had ~12v on each end. Hopefully it is the switches on the master cylinder. I will check this out soon.

The rear defroster is low on my priority list right now, thanks for the help in ID'ing

Take the time to understand what 86 911 Targa has posted. There is a 78 electrical diagram posted in the tech info center and I have not gone through it in detail so his info may be spot on. I have not really messed with my defrost wires so know very little about them.
