Weight of palletized SC engine?

EDIT - just weighed the engine I shipped. It was 503 lbs on a medium pallet with simple plywood walls and top - I was pretty much dead on with my initial estimate.

Original post:

Recognizing the potential variability in pallet weight...I am trying to ballpark the weight for shipping on my SC engine for sale.

It will be on a typical wooden pallet just a bit larger than the engine on either side, enclosed by plywood on all sides and the top. The engine will be complete with its exhaust and heat exchangers, tin, distributor, shroud, etc., missing only the CIS items.

In searching here, I see the typical weight for either a longhood-era or 3.2 Carrera engine is about 385 lbs. Perhaps take a little off for the CIS, then add back 80 lbs or so for the pallet? Maybe call it 500 lbs to be safe?

Someone has to have shipped a 911 engine on a pallet recently...

85 lbs for a pallette? No way 20 maybe and I would bet less. If you think an engine is 385 I'd go 425 and would bet you are over actual weight.

#500 will cover it. I think closer to #450 actual.

20# sounds super-low. I recently shipped a hardtop and its pallet, which was larger, was 150# easily. Figure the pallet itself plus all the plywood needed to enclose and cover it - way more than 20#.

Might split the difference between the advice here and my estimate and call it #475.

I thought you were just placing it on the pallette? I can see how the weight would go up. Use 500 it's always easier to go down than to tell someone you need more. Sorry for the confusion.

I just purchased a complete 3.2, with complete exhaust system.
It was drained well, shrink wrapped & secured to a wood pallet
about 10% larger then the motor. Gross weight was 480 lbs.
