915 whine question

Finally got around to 'really' adjusting my 915 linkage. Put new bushings in the coupler etc.
I'd like the prof experience of you guys.
I looked at tons of threads and tried 3 dif tech. to align everything...seems good.
I've also read the tranny whine threads.
The car shifts very nicely, almost notchy (in a good way) no searching. It feels like there is 'room' in each gear at the shifter (nothing binding or overly tight)...it goes into all gears easily.
Here is my maybe issue. I have gear whine in 3rd/4th and 5th if under heavy load (foot in it)...not so when cruising under load.
It is not an abnormal sound...just a slight high pitch until you cruise.
I've removed all of the sound deadening in the car (huge thick pads over the tranny and motor) and wonder if I am hearing just normal sounds?
This is with windows up, if they are down I cannot hear any tranny noise (they were down all summer (no AC) so I can't tell if it is new or not.
Do you guys with stripped down interiors (no sound deadening) hear any gear whine?
You 915 race/track guys experience this?

such a subjective thing - volume and tone of the whine are key factors to knowing if its "normal" or a problem

as my car got less and less interior the volume did go up

if it does the same thing in 3 and 4 that tells me the fore/aft is most likely OK
if it does it in 5 - that sounds OK as long as when it does it if you move the shift arm side to side the sound doesnt change -

monitor it and check your trans fluid regularly but first changing it out and putting in the right oil

check how much hair is on the mag plug (hopefully none)

and change fluid agin in 6 months to a year checking for hairs on that plug

trans oil is cheap, easy DIY project and so changing it WAY more often then needed is only so you can watch the drain plug for metallic wear issues -

I think

Thanks guys, it is full, checked it yesterday.
It is a subjective sound Ed and I'll take that advice. I didn't have the sound insulation removed last winter (windows up) so cannot remember if there was a slight noise. With no sound ins you hear every little thing going on behind and under you (I like that actually)....I'll change it out.

Stiffer transmission mounts also result in more noise in the cabin.

If you use, for example, WEVO semi-solids with blue pillows, you'll certainly hear sound from the transmission that you were never previously aware of. Which doesn't mean anything in particular (as long as it isn't bad noises); it was always there - you were just insulated from it.

I can hear the transmission in every gear - unless the engine, wind noise or wastegate drowns it out. And there's nothing wrong with my tranny.

Agreed, added wevo mounts last year and I can hear all sorts of tranny sounds now.

The first time that I had a coupler problem in a 915 type car, I test drove it with the coupler/tunnel cover off. WOW! I was shocked at how much more trans noise came into the cockpit, just from the coupler cover being off and the tunnel carpet folded forward. Amazing...

Good. Was hoping that was the case. Damn thing talks to you without the insulation and I was driving with the coupler cover off. I actually like the high pitched gear whine when you put your foot in it...comes on about 3500 rpm. WhenI back off and cruise it goes away.
I'll drain the tranny in 3 to 4 months to check for swarf to be on the safe side.
Thanks.
