how to add a turbo
 

Hi I want to ad a turbo to my 84 targa and I don't know what parts I need to add a turbo 4 to 5p any kit to do it or any one help me with a parts list thanks

The only kit I've heard of is from Promotive. They have a low pressure that kept the DME. I think there might be 2 companies that use that name. I believe they are (or were) in Kentucky or Tennessee.

Adding a real turbo involves a multitude of details, just one small one is, how you gonna scavenge the oil out of the low pressure side of the bearings?
You could just use one of these:

If you want a turbo, buy one already done at the factory. I have done this and while it is basically a plumbing exercise, without fabrication skills, and lots of detailed info, you can in a flash trash a very expensive engine.
Volumes of books have been written on the subject.

Just a little piece of advice ... if you're unsure about all that is involved in converting a N/A engine to a turbo,unless you have somebody with previous knowledge do it for you,it would be like building a ticking time bomb ... lots of $$$ when it blows up !

A safer and more reliable route would be to install a 3.6 !

Best method to get a turbo in your 911:

Step 1: Sell '84 911

Step 2: Buy a 930

Step 3: Done

The price delta between the two cars will probably be cheaper in the long run than a conversion, plus you get the sexier 930 body, the superior 930 suspension and brakes, better resale than a conversion, AND the engine has already been developed and sorted by the factory.

That said, the 930 appears to be an acquired taste, and time on these forums has convinced me that there are "930 people" and "911 people", and ne'er the twain shall meet.

I did the Protomotive conversion back in 2004, it has been flawless.

Do a search here on pelican, i.e.: turbo conversion. You will find plenty of succefull attempts.

Ask the same question on the turbo side of this forum, and you'll likely get more feedback.

The Carrera 3.2 engine is a really good candidate. You will be able to get about 330-350 chp.

The 87- with the G50 can handle that power. The 915 gearbox needs to be treated a little more careful.

If you are handy with a wrench and have deep pockets and dont mind your 911 reducing in value then go right ahead - many have done it here
However, the more practical and financially sound route would be to sell your '84 (unless you do have deep pockets and can have both!)
Then buy a 930 - either stock if you are SURE you want to keep it stock or if you want ulitmate power then buy someone elsess project which they have sunk $$$$ into.

a stock '70 911T
a modified '71 911T
and a 930

I have loved all of them - and wish I had not sold any of them, however the 930 definately gives more of a rush when I drive her.
