That's what I hope to do with my son (8) when he's a teen. The daughter (5) has no interest right now, though she does like to come out into the garage with me and draw on the floor with chalk.

Very cool story!!! I am doing the same with my son (now 10) and the SC we just got. He decided the color and the stuff to put in and will help with the build once the car comes back from the bodyshop.

that is where the dragon emblem comes in

And here is Daniel working on the 964...

And building his club house...

Yep. I like to think of my 9YO daughter as a co-conspirator. All spring as I was looking in earnest for a car to buy I would show my daughter photos. She was mostly luke warm at best, then one night she tells me she has something to say about buying a 911. She is very serious and this is obviously a big deal for her to say. She then goes on to tell me that to really be a cool car it should be dark blue. She then goes on for twenty more minutes about how cool dark blue cars are. The mind of a 9YO...how does it work? So, two days later I find (now mine) a Prussian Blue 86.

Daughter flew out to CA with me and made the road trip back. Whenever I'm the one to pick her up or drop her off, she makes sure to let me know I should be driving the Porsche.

She likes to help with maintenance some so I try to find small jobs she can handle. She wanted to help with changing out the motor mounts. She is skinny as a rail. As we were bolting up the new ones I held the backing wrench and she was manning the torque wrench. She was good for the small bolts(<20ft-lbs). When it came time to torque the large bolts to the carrier I was holding the extension while she pulled on the wrench. It was funny to watch her in a full body heave while at the same time intently listening for the click of the wrench.

She's the only son I have so, I'm quite happy she is interested in all things mechanical. -J

9 yo

I have a 9 yr old granddaughter and she is the light of my life. Not interested in working on cars but loves to sit and pretend to drive in my 911 and or 65 Comet convert. 7 yr old grandson enjoys laying under cars and pretending to work on them so I consider myself extremely lucky that they both like to spend time in my garage with me.

Allie has been working on our cars for years. She's now 23, finishing up her masters and working as a profiler for the FBI. Here she's changing the oil on her 944 this past September. She also put in a new power steering Rez, hoses and pump. She's done a valve job and we fully painted it this past June. She loves her 944 and says she will keep it forever. Kids, what can you do! I'd like to see her move up to an 87-89 911, but that takes $$ she doesn't have....yet.

We are also restoring a 74 Alfa GTV and she's become a very good welder, mig, tig and gas. This past summer she took a weeks worth of classes at. McPerson College in Kansas to Lear metalworking from the masters. English wheel, plansihing, lead filling, shrinking, etc...

More power to you guys! Unfortunately, this doesn't always work. I tried to do this with my son from an early age. He never developed any interest. He's now 27, has a degree in Computer Science, and a good job in the field. Has no interest in cars other than to drive them from point A to point B. Nor motorcycles, ATVs, etc. even though he was exposed to all for his entire life.

I envy those of you who have been able to share your passion with your kids.

This actually happened to me, here is the story...

When I was in high school and I got my license my parents did not want to get me a car. There assumption was I would crash it or something silly. I was aloud to use the family minivan if I needed but it was often in use so I had no car. Any way, one evening a family friend came over, he often drove his old Porsche 924S which he had for most of the time I knew him. On this specific evening he was not driving it. I asked what had happened to the car as I had not seen it in a while. He preceded to tell me that the car was in the shop and they told him it was going to be 5K to fix it. The shop thought the harness was bad and needed to be replaced. He was telling me that based on what he paid for it he was just going to junk the car at this point. He was paying the shop to store it and it was just not worth it at the time.

As a joke I asked him if I could have it. To my surprise he said yes. It was cheaper for him to give it to me than pay to have it crushed and towed to the junk yard. That evening I went to my parents and said hey he is willing to give me his old Porsche, it does not run but I think I can fix it. My parents laughed it off and did not believe that he would just give me a Porsche. Eventually they spoke to him and found out that he was not kidding. I dont think my parents ever thought I would get the car running so they let me have it. After some digging and posting on various forums I found out that the ECU may be bad. Had it sent to a shop, turned out my hunch was right and they rebuilt it. 3 months later I had the car up and running. Ill admit it was not much but I was in high school and I was driving a Porsche so I was happy as a clam. That led to my purchase of a partially functional 911 3 years later, then my current DD an 87 944. To date I have paid less for all 3 of these cars than I would have for a new base model accord. The little 924S opened my eyes to a whole new world of not only education, but people. Though Porsche meets I have made great friends and meet great people. I hope to do the same thing with my kids one day. I must admit that at the present time I am only 21 so Porsche's are more about getting my hands dirty fixin' them, going fast, and having a beautiful woman in the passenger seat (maybe future misses Porsche lover).

Regards
Dave

^Cool story and good for you for taking a car that would've just been junked and using all the resources available to you to bring it back from the dead.

As a mid-20s year old guy...you know how many girls I know my age that give a damn about my car?

Zero. Daughters and cars is very rare breed.

I hope my daughter is not like that when she is older... She will not get in the garage to work the cars with me, that would be awesome.... But she can't wait to get behind the wheel and drive! We have done a few kart sessions, and she is reading about the traffic laws and safe driving.... We bought her car two years before she gets her drivers permit... She picked the color, wanted a manual tranny (to my surprise), and picked the options... And every day asks me when I will start teaching her to drive... Well, she still has a few more kart sessions to go before she drives her car. For now she sits in it and dreams about driving it. Here she is in her future car:

I'm lucky enough to be heading off to the Carolinas Region PCA Club Race this weekend with my youngest daughter. As a college freshman, she's driving 5 hours to CMP where she'll work as Timing & Scoring asst, returning for the third year. She's been known to correct her male classmates who can't tell a Carrera from a Cayman, too. All 3 of my kids have grown up around Porsche and PCA. My son's first driving event was the Autocross at Parade in Hershey. They've participated in 3 Parades, not just attended, but participated. As 20-somethings, they're still interested in going with Dad to look at cars.. They weren't so interested in the first one. But now they're just as interested as I am in when is the Concours? where is the Autocross? What day will we work? And the Volunteer Party! Each has taken their own path but all continue to be involved in some form or fashion. I'm sure at some point their interest may wane, but in the meantime I couldn't be happier.

Mine is still in diapers but she already likes to sit in the front seat and grab the steering wheel. Taking her to her first race this coming weekend. That Bumble Bee in my signature has been under a tarp for 2 years. What's another 15 years, right?
