Can you help - tail light wiring mess?

Hope someone can help. While removing the driver side rear tail light assembly I noticed that someone previous to my ownership had siliconed over the wires presumably to prevent water from entering the unit?

The problem is the connector appears to be missing and the wire/nibs have been siliconed directly into the socket, I'm having a bit of a challenge uploading photos from my iPad.

Can anyone tell me where I can source the wiring diagram to help me solve putting this back together or direct me as to which colored wires go into which socket? If you can assist me send me a PM and I will send images direct to your email?

Sure hope someone can help?

Regards,
Mike

use 2 people and a multimeter, just turn on the lights, reverse, brakes, and turn and identify what wire does what.

Here is a photo I took of the left tail light showing how the wires attach so I would know how to re-attach them later. If you need a higher resolution photo, send me a PM and I will email it to you directly.

I guess I should say it. What year is your car?

I have some wiring diagrams, but without the year, I can't help.

Sorry Pelicans, thanks mreid for bringing this to my attention, the holidays are getting the better of me.

The car is a 1976 912E.

Am I missing something as far as uploading images using the iPad? When I try I get a message and dead-end?

Thanks again,
Mike

I only go back to 1980. What colors are the wires? Perhaps we can figure it out that way. I'll start...brown is ground! Sorry just fooling around.

Not sure if Porsche changed the color code convention, but in 1980:

brake: black/yellow (bright side of dual filament bulb)
tail: gray/red (other side of dual filament bulb)
rturn: black/white
lturn: black/white
license: gray
ground: brown

Brock:

Here is a schematic I've had saved for years and in has worked well for me.
Also you might consider adding a signature block to your posts that describes
what car you have and any mods you have done. This is very helpful to others
who are trying to help diagnose problems you might be experiencing.

light

I had some issues with my driver's side tail light (76 911). The problem I was having was the slot that the connector fit into was popping out of the tail light housing because the tabs were broken. This was causing the connectors (two on the same piece for the tail light/brake light) to come off and bounce around, which would create a short. I had to use epoxy to secure it in place. This fixed the issue.

If there is silicon there holding it together, this maybe why.

Thanks for all the input, here are a few photos of what I am facing. With the drawings and info submitted I should be able to work this out, however, please have a look anyway and offer opinions, please.

Regards,
Mike

I took the liberty of adding your pics to your post on the 912bbs.
Hope you don't mind.
You'll get more help there now too.

First thing that comes to mind...you need a new socket assembly.
Get one and you will have better grip on the connections ...and...longer wire to play with.

besides that... a PO really effed up your car - do a thorough search to find out if they did something else that could start a fire - check un der the dash carefully

also, hunt down the PO and kill them

Thanks for all the help. Between the drawings and suggestions I should be able to get this figured out.
