yes, i thought it was like a 73.5 i had as a parts car. what threw me off is the black paint that was flaking and aluminum underneath. what did a 70 71 or 72 look like up close?

are these worth 300.?

I'm not sure about the earlier cars but on my '74, it was originally annodized black but that has worn off and is now a silver/purple color. Some people paint them - I plan to have mine re-annodized someday.

is it metal or plastic?

It's metal. Someone else said it was 70 / 71 and that makes a lol more sense cause the engine is a 70t engine. The thing that I kept looking at was after the black paint flakes I see alum silver underneath. The 73 74 is anodized black which is not there. Anyone got any 70 71 grills I can see?

My 69. I believe they changed to black in 73.

That style grill came out midyear 1967 when the decklid changed to one bigger opening from the previous two openings. It was not black anodized until late 1972 or so.

I've taken those completely apart before. Each individual rail can come off.

If you remove each rail, you can clean it up fairly well with a soft steel wool and a bit of paint remover (IF it is paint!)

There are 4 distinct grills for 65 to 73 911s. Sorry for the bad pics.

65 to 68 1/2 used this type of grill with the split decklid

68 1/2 to 69 got a new style grill marked by having only 3 bars. these don't have studs but use cheesehead bolts. decklids are also unique to these years, though any other lid will fit.

70 and 71 got the same clear anodized grill but Porsche added 2 bars, almost certainly because the 3 bar grills deforme so easily. decklid added 4 bumps to match up to the 2 new bars.

72 to 74 got black anodized grills, though this one looks like it was rattle-canned.

Which one of those four is worth the most?

My sense is the 68.5 to 69 3-bar grill is worth the most in excellent condition. These go for $400 to $500 for the one shown above.

Thanks Shaun for the updates and pictures. The 1965 to 1967 (build year) grills are more "ornamental" and intricate.

I remember when I learned the 3-bar grill wasn't 69-only but started late in 68. I love all the details and changes on these cars over the years, and what amazingly stayed the same.

I had two late 1968 cars with the 3 bar grill. Problem is I had so many early cars I mix them all up now! The 1965 build 911 I had was my favorite. The valve guides had worn out at 70K, so I put my 70S engine in the thing at the time. Fun.

Engine Grill

My car is a 74 and its grill looked pretty bad too. Yours is somewhere between 69 and 76. Mine was anodized black and had faded to purple. I spent a lot of time on it with oven cleaner (a fellow on Pelican recommended oven cleaner - just be careful, cause the fumes are bad) (used a whole can or more), paint stripper, steel wool, etc. First i ground off the rivets and took the mesh off of the back. Do it carefully so as to not destroy some rubber strips that hold the top and bottom edge in place. Once I had the anodized material off, I sanded and polished the top edge of the ribs, brush painted the 'straps' and sprayed the mesh. Then reassembled.

A lot of work, but what else would I do on a rainy Sunday?

I'm doing a backdate 72 starting with black brightwork to an alum look so rear grill is a big part of this look. Looks like I'm polishing one of mine. Thx.

grill

vintage. I agree with the bright trim needing a polished grill. This is the car I am building. I think the tail lights are going to be european (all clear) with bright edges.
