Muffler Mods

Hi All -
I recently converted a dual inlet single outlet muffler to a dual outlet "sport" muffler for my 914-6. It sounds simply wicked. I love it. Here is a pic:

Earlier this month I picked up a 911 with a 3.2L conversion that is running a totally stock exhaust (including the cat). I do not want to cut up/modify the rear valance for the dual exhaust tips. Are there any internal modifications I can do to the factory 3.2 muffler, but retain the single outlet/stock look?

Thanks!
Scott S

I don't have an answer to your question but want to say, nice job on the 914 muffler. It looks great.

I have seen cases where another outlet was added to the right sid o f a 3.2 muffler, but it was pointed down behind the valance so you could not see it. You get the benefits of the dual out, but the looks of a single out.

Nice Scott!! I've never seen that car at the Boulder/Denver C&C. You should bring it to the January meet up, weather permitting.

For the 3.2, you could upgrade to a M&K 1in/1out for a big savings in weight, more sound, and more flow.

Cheers,

- Craig_D

Sorry - no pics of the muffler build. I just did it based on the usual modification schematic that has been around forever. The only difference was that I spaced the tips further apart and used and old set of megaphones for the tips.

I have takedn it up to Fergs a few times, but that was back when there were only 30 of us and most all of the cars were either 914's or 911's. I brought the speedster up this summer, but it was so packed I had to park on the street!

Here is a picture of the car. I owned it for 21 years. It was not easy watching it get loaded on to a transport after I sold it 3 weeks ago.....

Scott, back when I ran stock heat exchangers on my Carreras I'd modded the mufflers. But it does require cutting the top off the muffler to remove a couple of the baffles inside. I would also add a 3 or 4" stainless tip too. No dyno numbers to substantiate any improvement but the butt dyno seemed to think it helped a bit. Changed the tone to a deeper rumble without any resonance at all, and without being too loud. I'd have to dig back about 20 years to see if I can find the drawings of how it was done though.

Can you just post about how big a hole you cut in the top to modify the baffles??

Or maybe even the drawings.
