Question Which exhaust do I have?

Hello,

I'm a new Porsche owner (<2 months) I've read a lot about the older exhaust with stainless heat exchangers being the best setup for performance. Below is a link to an exhaust picture. This is the style thats under my car now. Is this the good one?

Thanks for your help, this board is excellent!

No. You're looking at the "Smog-Nazi" Special Edition. Some of us have lost our kitty-cats though.....

Nope, it's the least desirable setup. 1974 and earlier, the heat exchangers headed straight back into dual inlet muffler. Problem with these factory exchangers is they rusted rather quickly. In steps SSI. They basically make a replica of the '74 and earlier style except it is a true equal length and made of stainless steel. After 1974, due to emissions and the need for a catalytic converter, they redesigned the exhaust system to the passenger side heat exchanger now heads forward, into a crossover pipe, where the two merge and go through a cat, then into a single inlet muffler. Problem with switching to the older style is you can no longer use a cat, a big problem for most. But there is serious hp to be had should you make the change over. Do a search on ssi and 1974 heat exchangers; you'll find pics and plenty of info on this topic.

Dave,
Welcome to our little world. There is a power of knowledge and experience on this board, and one of the things I noticed while lurking here in my first year of Porsche ownership was that many, many questions have been asked many times before. The archive search is a great resource. For example, there was a great thread on this subject just a few weeks ago, with some museum quality pics and descriptions from Bill Veberg. Take a look at http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/Forum3/HTML/011102.html

Enjoy the car, and the company!

Tony,

Thanks for the link! Pictures help me a lot!

The nuts where my exhaust bolts to the head are rusted nicely. It will be a fun task to pull that thing off when the time comes. Is there any way to tell if I'm getting safe air from my heat exchangers or not? The system seems to put out heat nicely, and it doesn't seem to smell funnny. If I could prove to the wife that the ones I have are unsafe, she'd open up the purse if you know what I mean

Thanks again for the info, great information here!

Tsk, tsk, tsk, Dave... gonna try the old, "tricking the wife" routine, eh?
It works for a while. (Methinks you have not been married too long.) Eventually, they get smart to your lies and deception, and question everything!
Better get going before she wises up!

I know what you mean, Doug. I notice that single guys commonly can create all sorts of deceptions and missing information. It works for them. when you get married, the jig is up and you pay dearly for every tiny concealment. It's not worth it.

My wife and I are very happy, but she is a CPA and I don't get to "waste" much money on car accessories. I need a good reason, I think carbon minoxide poisoning is a pretty good one I must admit she really digs this Porsche. I've had a lot of muscle cars etc. in the past. She says..."this is the first cool car you've had that isn't big"

Maybe I'll get her a new SSI setup for our 12th anniversary in September

Go man, go!
If you can swing a set of SSI's for a anniversary present, you have the marriage thing dialed in!

I have 32 years coming up. Does that mean I can ask for a 3.2/G-50 conversion???

3.2 yes!, G50 NO! its way to heavy and not necessary until you have a LOT more hp.
