Ticking Sound with Clutch Out? Thoughts

Hi all,

My 84 Carrera started this noise on the way back from finishing my holiday shopping.

Conditions:
-Clutch is out and I'm in gear
-Let off the throttle
-Then I hear a knock-knock-knock or tick-tick-tick that is speed dependent (i.e. as the car slows, the frequency of the knocking reduces as well)

I was planning on road tripping in the Carrera tomorrow for the holidays (VA to PA/NJ. Any thoughts on what this sound could be under those conditions? The minute I put the clutch in, the sound is gone.

Thanks and happy holidays

-Derek

throw out bearing. usually will make noise for some time before it goes completely. there is a clutch job in your future but IMHO id still make the trip if the noise just started and you really wanted to drive the car.

Any modifications prior to the noise?

While in gear touch the shifter and push slightly forward aft and side to side to see if the noise stops. Do not pop it out of gear, just enough to see if it clears up.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Clutch was replaced by good mechanic by the previous owner ~ 1 year ago (I know the mechanic personally, and he specializes in working on older pcars - and his work is known to be very thorough).

No mods with the drivetrain since it started.

I'll have to see if I can get under the car and take a look. Probably not going to happen tonight. Might take the other car just to play it safe...

I'm guessing this would indicate something sloppy in the shift linkage?

OK I just took it for a ride...

slightly pushing or pulling on the shifter didn't do anything.

Noise is VERY throttle sensitive. Even if I'm slightly on the gas... pretty much no noise. The minute I'm off the gas and coasting with the clutch out and in gear I hear tick tick tick.

In neutral, clutch out it does not do the noise.

Also clutch in there is no noise.

Almost sounds like someone is hitting a cow bell

Check the easy stuff first... Anything stuck to a brake caliper? Or a drive shaft? Once I thought my car was catching on fire because of a burning smell and it was a small pine cone stuck between caliper and rotor...

Check for broken CV joint boots or loose cvj bolts. Easy to inspect if you get under the car.
