915 Gearbox Oil

Hello all and Happy Holidays !

I just had my mechanic put a new seal in my gearbox and we obviously had to refill her. I wanted Swepco but unfortunately he had none and ended up using Redline, not sure which one of the Redline products though. He said if it's good enough for the BMW's it will be just fine for my Piggy.

Well I must say that after driving her that the gearbox feels awful now, a bit tight and not nearly as smooth as she was before the change. Almost feels as if there is no oil in there. Is it me or is it the Redline ?

Probably the RedLine. RL has a mixed reputation...do a search..there have been some very good results using a Kendall gear lube. Don't recall which Kendall gear lube.

Our host has the Swepco

They need to use the Red Line that has the NS in the product name. Our trannys need the Non Slippery stuff for the syncros to work right. The stuff he put in is for a modern trans and wont work well.

Here's a link: Red Line Synthetic Oil - Gear Oil for Manual Transmissions - 75W90 NS GL-5 Gear Oil

I have this in my 901 for the past 1000 miles and it works ok, much better than the mystery glop that was in there but I think it can get even better. Will try the Swepco or Kendall next spring.

Just get the Swepco. It's not very difficult. Let it warm up inside overnight. A $5 drill-operated pump will make the job even faster.
