I was still in active duty in the U.S. Army when Desert Storm/Shield and General Schawarzkopf was in theatre. A hand salute to our departed General and may God have him in his glory!

Gen S was actually a very average General Officer. I met him on a few occasions during business.
His war plan for shield storm was so FU that it wan not approved by by the Joint Chiefs and senior individuals sent by the Chairman actually handed him the war plan he executed.
I still thank him for his service and RIP.

No, but a mans legacy should be simply the truth. That's how I see it. I'll not go into circumstances or stories but a mans death should not change how he operated.
He was a good soldier, hardly a great one.

My recollection of events was that the joint chiefs didn't approve of him crossing into Iraq to crush Saddam while we had them on the run and the fire and manpower to do so. In hindsight it may have been prudent to do so at that time. General Schwarzkopf felt if the U.S. didn't do it then, we would end up going back to finish the job.

I don't recall them wavering over his plan to rid Kuwait of the Iraqi's. It appeared to work to perfection.

Matt,
Not what I was referring to. Gen. S's invasion warplan that he approved (months prior to crossing into Kuwait/Iraq) was a very simple frontal attack thru Kuwait.
This was disapproved by the Joint Chiefs and reworked by senior staff officers and given to Gen. S to execute.
The new warplan involved the western end run encircling element with the feint frontal attack thru the SA border into Kuwait combined with the Divisional air asslt into the enemies rear.
He saluted and executed the warplan he was given. Most think it was his plan. It was not.
He was a good soldier in that regard.

You got part of it right, we have to remember that we had the support of most of the Muslin countries around the area when Iraq invaded Kuwait, for fear that Saddam Hussein would end up attacking them. So the U.S. in order to maintain the collision and fearing that it would dissolve, we agreed not to go all the way to Baghdad or go after Hussein. Which is what Gen S wanted to do. Remember we also ask patience from Israel when Hussein started to send Scud rockets, since Israel was going to go and really finish the job for real. I agree, if we would have taken care of Saddam then, we would have never been involve in the way we had after the fact. However what is done is done and can't go back to re-do it again.

Thanks guys.
I thought the end run plan was his.
Ipsalsa, I do remember now that we would have lost the Muslim allied countries support if we crossed the border and pushed to Baghdad.
Reiver, thanks for straightening out the origins of the battle plan.

I continue to appreciate his great leadership.
