Bouncing Oil Level Gauge
My oil level is steady and reliable with the engine idling and the car stationary. But in driving the car, that gauge spends most of its time VIOLENTLY banging against the peg and the top and the peg at the bottom. Dozens of bangs per second. I should probably disconnect the ground at the sender and see what happens, but if someone has advice for me, I'm open.

That's normal.
It is only meaningful when the car idles on level ground and is at operating temp. Even then I would not rely on it and check the dipstick. BUT, violent bouncing can be caused by a bad connector. I was thinking of moderate floating all over the place.... Sorry

I inspected the connections at the gauge and the sender. disconnected and reconnected them. No change. The bouncing is truly violent. You can hear it. I should fix or disconnect it so the needle does not get bent, but it's been doing this for a couple of weeks at least.

Jim,
Jack is close ... electrical storm under the right rear fender! Is this a recent change of behavior? Try disconnecting and cleaning the 6-pole bulkhead connector for the right rear tail-lamp assembly ... the oil level sender is in that group!

I'll try that. It seems to be rpm-related more than speed-related. Wants to be okay below about 3000 rpm and WILD above that, but in my garage just now it went wild at 2700 rpm. Car stationary. Probably vibration-related.
If that doesn't fix it, I'll call in the GhostBusters.

You may have an electrical short. Check the wiring to the gague an see if it is grounding out intermittently.
