3.2 Hose assembly..questions

Please tell me about this hose assembly part...

It's role with air, fuel, vacuum? If vacuum it looks very prone to leaks..

Parts catalog says there is a check valve in it....best to replace?

Any thing else?

Thank you,

Mike

Vacuum manifold for power brake booster

Yep, vacuum. That one looks pretty decent. Check it for leaks and verify that the check valve is working and re install.

How would one quickly check the break booster vacuum assembly for leaks?

Best way is to plug two of the ends and put your mity-vac tester on the third to see it hold vacuum. Lacking this, you can plug two ends and put 5-10 PSI into it and spray it with windex to check for bubbles.

FWIW, I have struggled with understanding how this thing boosts the vacuum applied to the brake booster - something about a venturi affect of the small vacuum port drawing a higher volume of air from the low pressure area above the throttle.... seems like a kludge. I've never put a vacuum gauge on it to verify it works, but I'm assuming it does. Every other booster I've seen connects directly to the intake manifold.

Thanks for everyones input..

I think I will just buy a new check valve and just replace the hose clamps to try and shore the unit up as the it all seems a bit "loose"

Is it safe to assume vacuum leaks here only affect the booster and not how the engine performs?

Any non metered air entering the intake will affect the operation of the engine.

Asking because I don't know...assuming your comment means all vacuum leaks end up with air back into the combustion chamber, could one apply the 'spary with starting fluid and listen for increased idle' trick?

Never ceases to amaze, the quantity of knowledge on this forum!

The deterioration of the reducer hose to the right on the gold line, they are almost always cracked.
