Service Life Of A Pilot Bearing?

This thing has 5k miles on it. Bearings, felt, and everything else look fine. That brown stuff between the bearings is soft grease. What do you think: is it good to run, or should I replace it "while I'm in there"?

As a rule I always replace them, but 5k seems like brand new. I'd probably go with it.

Clean and repack.

How much is a new one? Might not be worth the risk.

A new one from our host is $35. I'm having the same dilema as we speak. My car has about 50k miles and clutch fork crapped out. While i have the motor out i'm going to replace the clutch and wondered about the pilot bearing as well. For $35 i'm not going to risk having to drop the motor again. If you have any doubt at all just replace it and be done with it. Yours looks like new but again for $35 it's just not worth the risk. At least IMO.

That is a real dilemma. With 5K miles it is virtually brand new, and you KNOW it is a good bearing. I have installed parts that were new that were defective. I have never had a defective pilot bearing but I am sure it is possible. If the new one was made in China I would for sure use the old one.

$35 is not a major "while I am in there" overall. It is a tough decision.

Thanks, guys. I think I'll clean it up and if nothing looks odd I'll run it. (I am replacing the throwout bearing though. Even after only 5k miles it's looking less than new...)

Just remember to put some lithium grease on it before installing and you should be good to go. 5k miles is like brand new unless it is noisy or out of round (which I doubt).

5000 miles... I'd reuse it.
I've put 100k miles on my pilot bearing.

I'd re-use it too.
