What the heck is the tank under the left fender?

Not the washer fluid tank. This plastic tank sits above the washer fluid tank, it's about 1/2 the size of the washer tank and I don't see where the lines run to/from. Any ideas?

I'm looking for diagrams now....

Chris,

Parts diagram show a carbon container, use with the fuel system.

Could this what you are talking about?

Joe

Not sure Joe. It could be. I'm going to try and get a photo of it to post here. Tank seems empty and very light??

Yeah, I have one of those too...just behind the horn assembly. It has to be part of the antiquated emission control system back then for the tank vapors. Other then that it looks large enough to keep the front end afloat in high water conditions!

Curious to get a positive ID on this as well.

Regards
Bob

I have a diagram of the emission controls for my 76 and it is the charcoal tank for the fuel tank vapors.

I believe it is a plastic tank or bottle that provides storage volume for fuel vapors collected from the fuel tank and elsewhere. The vapors reside there until they can be absorbed by the charcoal canister and/or inducted into the engine and burned. I suspect the need for the tank comes from the condition when the fuel tank is completely filled and there is not sufficient vapor space for the fuel vapors to expand into. This extra volume from the tank likely prevents an excessive pressure rise in the system. We have cleaned up this tank in my son's '73 and intend to reinstall it with new hoses. His car will likely end up in California and who can predict the future emissions inspection rules? Even for the currently exempt '73's! Cheers, Jim

I suspect it is to isolate the gas fumes and gas tank from any naked flames that may be around the car to prevent a blowback type fire.
