Two 73's for consideration
I posted a thread a couple of days ago introducing myself to the forum in search of an early 911 Targa.
I found of a couple of very nice examples and wondered what the forum thought of the car/price/value. I realize that there's not not much info to base a decision on, but any input would be much appreciated. I chose these two examples because they are in CA where I live and both appear to be in excellent condition. The first appears to be a private sale here in the SF area and the second a dealer down in Southern CA. The shop in Costa Mesa (European Collectibles) also has a '73 T that is $10,950 (http://www.europeancollectibles.com). $19K strikes me as a pretty high price for a T...it would have to be absolooootely perfect for that kind of money.

The car in SF belongs to former or current rennlister. Go to rennlist.com and do a search of the archive for Steve Watson or even aubergine (car color). You might be able to get some history on the car from that site. He might have even posted some stuff here. Good luck,

The T is WAY too high. The S looks nice and might be worth the premium price if it is exactly as described - only thing missing from the description is the amount of documentation, number of owners, etc. -- Curt

Interesting pair of cars you have found. The 73 S looks VERY GOOD. It has all the right stuff, sport seats, MFI still intact, recent paint, rebuit motor... The Certificate of Authenticity is very important for validating the color, equipment, etc... I'd say the price is fair value for a no excuses, no stories, car that will pass a PPI needing nothing. Any faults should be deducted from that $27,900, as that is a price for a fault free #1 condition car. That means you could drive it onto the grass at a Regional PCA concours tomorrow and draw admiring comments, no sniggering. The white 73 T, on the other hand, I would say is seriously overpriced. It is NOT freshly redone, it has high mileage (~4200/yr), amd it's a T, so it is never going to be a collector car, actually. The price range for this car should be between $11K and $13K, plus something if the AC is really in working condition (pretty rare at this age). Again, a PPI is MUST, and any needed work would subtract $$ from the selling price.. Good Luck, personally, I could get pretty excited abt the eggplant S targa - that's a really neat vintage 911 color, not seen a lot.

Agreed, the T is way to high. Condition is everything. The S paint job looks topnotch. It sounds like a no excuses car worthy of top dollar. A real collectable.

The owner of the S says that he has docs back to the early 80's and a full tool kit for the car as well as some 'extra parts'. I'm going to try and call him in a few minutes and I'll post more info on this thread if I reach him.

Pretty much agree w/ everyone else. Price of "T" is wishful thinking, (though it looks like a nice car), price of the "S" is what ever you can get for it. It appears to be a "no-excuses" enthusiast-owned car that is known in CA. Porsche circles. Awesome unusual color as well. Early 911's are only a smart investment on the upper-end of value, IMO.
Good advice I read once about old British cars, but applies here too: "don't buy 'the best you can afford', buy the best there is, or just forget it. If you cannot afford the best, you definitely cannot afford the other kind."

I am selling my 1973 911T targa. I don't have records on it but it has minimal rust, no evidence that I can find of accidents, good paint (re-spray in original silver) and very good interior. Five Fuchs, Weber 40s, leather sport seats. Mileage unknown. I'm asking $9,500. Car is in Kansas City, delivery is negotiable. Contact me if interested.

Haven't talked to the guy yet, but learned through old emails that the purple color is not original. Silver was original. How significant is non original color for a car at this level?

Sorry Izzy. What I meant is that if that "rare" color was the original color on the car, as delivered by Porsche, it would be one factor that might prop up the price. However, since the car was repainted to a non-original color, I would think that the value of the car decreases. The highest price car would be one with the original paint, not even a respray, in excellent condition. Of course, this is just my opinion. Best wishes in your car search.

Didn't know that color wasn't original, how much would that de-value it, 10% if it was an incredible paint-job in a desirable color? Just wondering what others think. Obviously we're not talking about a concours car, but assuming it's just a notch below?

Tough to put a number on it Denis. For me, it's more a 'go / no-go' decision. If I'm spending $30K on an early S, I want original color. If I'm in the $20K range or less, it wouldn't be a big issue assuming it was well done. -- Curt
