twin battery set-up? If you wish to retain the stock appearance without the risk of acid spills, go with "exact fit" Sonnenschein. Don't know where you would buy them in Canada, though...

Paul is correct, Sonnenschein is the way to go to keep the factory set up. You will need their DF75 (A512 /40 A) gel cells - www.batterysales.com.

An alternative is go with a single Optima on it's side in one of the boxes and disconnect the excess wire.

Also, you can get the exact fit lead acid style ones from your Porsche dealer (http://www.porsche.com/canada/en/accessoriesandservices/classic/genuineparts/neweditions/). Look for: "Battery 12V 36Ah for the 911, Model: 911, Model Year: 1965-1973, Part number: 999 611 014 91, Availability: 01.03.2009". Pelican lists them at $189/ea and a special order.

Here in the states, an Interstate Battery U911 is also an exact fit.

There are other soptins such as Miata, Oddessy or Stinger batteries as well.

FWIW: I went with a single Optima.

Can someone add a photo of the Standard Mounting Adapter for Optima Battery, 911 (1969-73) as listed in pelican parts.

Think it is time to get rid of the two battery approach.

thanks

The one battery setup is a bastardization I would stay away from. There is a reason Porsche designed the car that way.

If it was me, I would get the rennline battery relocation kit which goes into the smugglers box, and get the ODYSSEY battery. Super clean setup, but it is not stock by any means.

The last time I went for dual batteries, I could not get them mail-order, so I got them through the local Porsche dealer about 65 miles away.

HTH.

Budget Batteries in Tacoma WA always has several exact fit batteries for the local long noses. If you happen to be down this way anyway, the price is right.

Best,
Tom

batteries X 2

I have fitted two batteries each time I have needed them but it just seems a total wast of time and money. Basically because Porsche used two lumps of iron to straighten out their poor handling problems in the SWB we were left with the two battery set up in the LWB. I suppose Porsche thought that was the engineering solution to poor handling after extending the training arms didn't do it for them.
I guess they didn't think we would notice sneaking the batteries back into the front of the car.

Maybe I can add a lump of iron to the RH side and put a battery back in the left side box! Or maybe I could put two lumps of iron on the left double the size of the battery box on the right and use a truck battery to provide all the necessary power.
you know I have a point!

Cheers

Terry

You might want to post this question on the Early S Registry, as well. I am going to be purchasing batteries for my 71 soon and have looked into this a bit.. In addition to the suggestions above, several people have posted that they are using Miata batteries.

regards,

Al

The Miata batteries will fit but the posts are too long. You need to trim (cut) the posts on the top so they don't short out on the top of the battery box.

The archives have many, many images of single battery installs.

"Can someone add a photo of the Standard Mounting Adapter for Optima Battery, 911 (1969-73) as listed in pelican parts."

I didn't realize there was an Optima installation kit for early 911s. I looked and couldn't find it.

Sherwood,

I never found one.

I put my Optima battery on it's side (with the ground post in the hole).

I used a flat braided ground strap to attach to the factory ground point.

Disconnected the crossover positive lead from the battery post clamp.

I made a hold down with some pipe support strap material. Pop riveted a D ring to one end to hook the strap onto the factory hook in the back of the battery box, bent it around the battery and used the stock hold down bolt to attach the other end to the threaded point in the floor of the trunk.

Be sure to put something to cover the positive battery post to prevent an accidental short or arc.

The end sticking out looks like this:

Here's my first Optima:

The ground post is exposed (w/cutout switch).

A float charger is hard wired into the fuse box.

I went with a Deka sports battery. 365 CCA each. They don't have the traditional auto terminal posts. I bought Odyssey brass terminals and mounted them on the side. Yes, I know the positive terminal needs a cover.
