Quick Question about Painting over a Phosphoric Acid "Bath"

Hi,

I've got a muffler that I brushed with phosphoric acid yesterday. I think it's had time (It's been 24 hours) to do what it's going to do, but I may have laid it on a bit thick, because it's left a sticky residue on the muffler. Is there something I can rinse it with (water? marine clean degreaser? acetone? ) before I start the process of spraying it with high heat paint?

Thanks!

Michael (mto = emptyo)

Its supposed to be rinsed off with water as soon as the rust conversion reaction has finished. Usually takes 10 to 15 mins. I use an airline to dry and then undercoat paint asap. Not sure about a muffler, maybe its galvanised and the phosphoric has has turned into something unpleasant.

I did the same thing to heat exchangers, maybe 3 months ago. I did it over tiime with several application. I let the acid dry on the parts, which left a film of sorts. I have not painted yet, but intend on cleaning first with Eastwood''s metal wash.

I ended up rinsing it well, and it looks good. Ready for paint!

I know those are the instructions, but it still fills me with terror to run water over my unpainted parts!!

Having said that, when I painted my '75 a number of years ago, I did the phosphoric acid/wash followed by a good epoxy primer (all Sikkens in this case) and it has been 15 years without nary a spot of rust or anything anywhere. So it does work....
