Help, sudden poor running '88 Carrera

Did a quick search but can't seem to find this same issue. Car is '88 Carrera, bone stock, rebuilt engine 20k ago (190k total). Till this incident running perfectly. The only "work" I've done lately has been suspension and brakes. Car started and ran perfectly this morning, drove about 15 minutes and parked for about 3 hours. Started car fine but noticed when waiting to get out of parking lot it was idling rough, then as tried to pull out car backfired and stalled. Fired right up but runs really bad at lower rpms, once I can nurse it past about 2k it runs perfectly (or seems to). At lights it would idle a little rough and then I'd have to feather the throttle to get it off the line and it would drive fine once it was going. It seems to be better as it warms up but the car never got to full operating temps.
Note that this was very sudden, ran perfect up to this last drive.
I can;t find anything obvious and I really don't even know where to start...any suggestions on obvious things?
Thanks

CHT sensor? Pull the white plug from the 3-plug harness on the left hand side of your intake manifold. Bend a paper clip or small-gauged wire and jump the two female plugs from the wire you pulled, and see if that makes a difference in your running condition. Takes 2-4 minutes to do, and it's FREE.

On my 88 since i am too cheap to buy new wires i check to see none of the wires has come loose.

After that pull the injector plugs one by one and see if on one the idle doesn't change.

These are also free and take moments to perform.

I'll check the CHT, odd thins was I was down to less than a quarter tank of gas so if it was bad fuel would that not have shown up before? This was VERY sudden, drover perfectly probs right after start up. Thanks for the replies.

I also agree you should test the CHT. Is it just running rough at idle? Is there any surging while the car is trying to idle?

All good suggestions above.

Also, check for loose fasteners on your intake (intake manifold leak) and vaccuum line leaks. I've run across a couple of 3.2's with loose intake manifold fasteners.

Exactly the same symptoms I experienced when my O2 sensor went TU . . . also wouldn't hurt to swap out your DME relay.

Good luck.

look inside the distributor cap for moisture and carbon tracks. maybe one cylinder isn't firing. pull off either a plug connector or injector plug. one at a time while it's running to see if any cylinder is dead, like from a fouled plug or dead injector.

OK...very frustrating...the problem appears to have stopped as fast as it started!!! I got home and started checking everything I could and could not see anything obvious but what do I know. I decided to let it really cool down to see if maybe it only affects cold running. Started it up and ran some errands later and it ran perfect. Filled up the tank and no issues. I have no idea if what caused it now and really don't know what to check. I guess I'll just have to wait for it to happen again... very frustrating.
