Street tires for 7&9x16 Fuchs

Hello everyone, been gone for a while. Out on a foreign assignment for a few years.

Time for the roach to come out of storage. Got a couple of sets of RA1s but need something that i could putz around when it is raining in Seattle.

What is left in the market that is decent?

thx.
Alf

16s tough, Potenza RE-11 is one of the few 265 if you like 'em big. Tirerack had a sale on them a few weeks ago.

Hi Alf,

I'm testing Falkens on my fronts and Nexens on my rears. Got them online for less than $100. each. (I've found running 3 lbs. less pressure than recommended adds life --- more even wear across the width.)

Continental makes a few very good rain tires.
I've been happy with them for 2 seasons now.

Yeah there are very few tires out there for us with 9x16 requiring 245/45/16's. I'm checking the Primewell PZ900 which are high performance z rated all weather as an alternative for street driving, they are sold thru Firestone and Tire Plus tire centers. The price is very reasonable for the set (front and backs) as they have both 205 or 225 and the 245 tires. I saw that Tires-Easy have some Nexens 3000 left over and there are some few sets left, from there is just the TireRack with the Bridgesotones RE11's or the track street legal ones. Is almost like you are forced to go 17's or if you find the tires you will pay a pretty penny for them!

Bridgestone is making RE-11's in 205/55 and 245/45. You can get them on tire rack. For some reason, if you search for those 2 tire sizes combined, the RE-11 doesn't show up. But if you look for 205/55-16, then select the RE-11, then look for other sizes the 245/45-16 shows up.

+1

I'm running the RE-11 in 205/245. I've been please so far. Car is my daily driver with a bit of hooliganism thrown in when possible. RE-11s work well in the rain, but then they are new. Quiet and more traction than I need. I'm curious to see how they'll handle once the temps dip into the 30s but so far so good.

I'm curious to hear how they do. Mine are setting in my garage waiting to be mounted. Probably in the spring. My RA1's still have some treat left, but I wanted to get a set of RE-11's while they were still available.

Anyone have any photos of these on your car? I need to replace the tires on my 89 Carrera, with 16x7 and 16x9 fuchs. Just started to look around.

Lots of people run 7 & 9, IMO it's the preferred combo. It's also the most common use with the 9s. It's what the factory used, in fact, on the later (80s) 911 Turbos.

Same with 6s and 8s. That's what the factory used on the '89 Carrera.

Do not do. RE-11's are SUMMER TIRES, complete with warning from Tire Rack not to use in temps near freezing:

"Not to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, in snow or on ice, or at high speeds in deep standing water."

I tempted fate a few years ago with similar tires and warning. Please believe me, you'll lose traction when you can least afford it.

I'm reading you 5x5. Tires have been fine down into the 40s. At those temps I peddle softly until everything has had a chance to warm up. Even though we see freezing night time temps it's rare that daytime temps don't at least break into the 40s. If it's that cold I drive something else. -J

they did that to create lots of understeer & it is the preferred combo for unskilled drivers, right?

The factory never specified wider rims than 6'' on the front of the Carrera 3,2 in 16'' diameter. In 15'' yes, in 16'' no.

I somehow doubt that they thought in Stuttgart about unskilled drivers...

It's the preferred combo of drivers who appreciate the extraordinary steering feel of the torsion bar 911s.

I'm running Kumho ASXs in 205/55 and 245/50R16 on my 7s and 9s.

The 50-series rubber is a little taller than 45-series rubber, but it is much more widely available.

Eric - do you have a picture you can post? my car has 245/45 on the rear now, and 205/55 up front. The rear tire sidewall looks a bit short, I have a feeling the 245/50 is the way to go. Any rubbing issues with the rears on 245/50s? I just got this car and am starting to sort it out. I also have the original 6s that were originally on the front, but the 7&9 combo looks awesome. Jason

Here is a pic of 205/50/16 on a 7 in front & 245/50/16 on a 9 in the rear

The rear also has 8mm spacers.
