Alternator rebuild - need shop

I need to get the alternator for my 76 Carrera 3.0 rebuilt.

It is the old style ext voltage regulator, and I'd like to keep it like that.

Where do I get this done?

I have asked around here in lower Alabama, but non of my friends and colleages know anyone they'd recommend.

I think, I once heard about a good shop in Florida, but cannot remember the name, or find it in a search.

Help please.

Several here, including myself, have had good experiences with Mark Susko at Stellar Generator in Pittsburgh, PA. Give them call if you can't find anyone local to you.

i have not done one of these alts, but there really is not much to them. brushes and maybe bearings. clean the part of the rotor where the brushes ride with very fine sandpaper.

you can rebuild the motor on your starter the same way. helps tremendously with hot starts.
you can even rebuild the solenoid, but soldering is involved.

Not sure where you are in Alabama, if you are close to Panama City Beach, Fl., there's an excellent shop (Alternative Automotive) the owners name is Paul Sandifer, this guy repairs 911's with his feet, exc. rep etc. The guy is very friendly, but he's also no BS. The number is in the book (the exact town is Callaway - 10 min from PCB) good luck

I managed to find a local shop that actually seemed like a good shop. But, the tech said he couldn't get the required parts: ie. stator.

Two questions: where can I source these parts?

Second, if I cannot get the parts, I am considering buying a new one here from pp, but they cannot confirm which one I need, since my car is a euro Carrera 3.0

The one I am looking at is on this page:

Porsche 911 & Carrera Charging System - Page 1

It has got pp part number: AL-9341-x

Is this the right one, and do I have to change out my V reg. as well?

Thanks

Are you sure your alternator needs to be rebuilt?
I thought mine needed a rebuild ('78 SC w/ext reg) and a new regulator fixed it, along with a new battery.

alternator rebuild

It's a little far but they're good and fast. Chandler Alternator Starter LLC in Chandler AZ. Same day service, just had bearing replaced and completely cleaned and inspected, $61. They have Valero parts in stock.

Can you post a picture or at least the SEV Marchal numbers from the back of the alternator? We might be able to help you determine what you have from that.

In the US, early 1975 Porsche 911s had the smaller alternator case with the deeper fan housing, requiring the use of a spacer ring. The later '75 cars had the 70amp SEV Marchal alternator, which has the larger case and does not require a spacer.

It looks like the 70a alternator to me.

If you go with the rebuilt AL-9341-X, make sure the case is the same length and size as yours. Also, some have complained over recent times about the poor quality of the Bosch rebuilds, but you may not have any choice.

You could also post a wanted ad in the Classifieds forum, and then use that as a core to get rebuilt by your shop.

You should convert the external regulator to solid state as a minimum.

Looks as if the only thing salvageable will be the front and rear end housings.

Just buy a complete rebuild including the internal regulator.

I believe that you have Paris Rhone alternator (made in France). I have a used one out of a 79 (external voltage regulator) that was working when I removed it. I have looked all over it and cannot find any numbers stamped in it, but I believe it is also a Paris Rhone. PM me if you are interested. If you go with an internal voltage regulator, you will have to modify the shroud on the back of alternator ( if my memory is correct)
Good Luck!!

Thanks for the offer, but this is an SEV MARCHAL
