My first 911
I have had 924s and 944s for a while now and I am ready to get my first 911. My question to you guys is what 70 to 80s model, year, options is the most desirable. If you were going to look for a 70s or 80s 911 which one would you get, at least look for.

The short hood group are fast becoming pricey, the first long hoods seem to have a bad rep due to the 2.7 engine, the 78-83 SC's are probably the easiest to work on and have a pretty bullet proof engine case then you have the 84 and up group where there were a lot of changes...most of them good :=). I have had a 72 which I loved and my 79SC makes me smile...YMMV

The general rule of thumb is buy the newest one you can afford, 911's got progressively better every year, of course the 2.7 was problematic for reasons you can read in other posts. That said, I followed that rule and bought a 2.7 anyway. Now I wish I bought a long hood! My car has been great mostly since I swapped in a 3.2. I like the early years because they're lighter and have fewer power items.

I guess the most important questions are...
1. Do you have mechanical skills? 2. What's your budget? 3. What do you plan to use the car for?

I have a 924 and a 944 and a 78 911SC, I would go for anything from a 78-89 that makes it an SC or a Carrera, if you want all the modern creature comforts and what not but still want air cooled awesomeness get a 933.
Regards Dave
