Porsche Crest HELP! Tach stopped during upgrades

During recent and ongoing upgradeson my 84 Carrera, with my parts purchased from Pelican, my Tach stopped working, at some point. The car is still up on jack stands while I wait for front t-bars and F/R sway bars. Here's what happened: In removing the center console for the short shifter install, it didn't just lift off as the texts indicated. It felt like it was hung up, then suddenely gave way. At one point, while fine tuning the shifter, a shop rag was pulled off the rear deck and snapped the alt. belt. The alt. seems to be functioning fine, with the battery light on w/ignition key, then off with the engine running. As I said, I don't know at what point the tach ceased working, but I do know that it was OK before I started the projects. A single black wire going into the right side of the trani seems intact. I believe this is the tach sensor wire (?)
Could the rag in the fan belt caused tihis? Or did a wire become diconnected in the console shifter change? I tried to pull the tach out to look for dislodged wires but interestingly it only comes away from the dash about a half inch...like it's being held back by tight wires. The other gauges seem to be working fine and I can get them away from the dash OK. Please help. It's alos so dang hot and humid here in PA (90+ degrees and 85% humidity that one can only stay in the garage or outside for a little while. Thanks for any help!
