Getting ready to order SSIs - question for the experts
Getting ready to order SSIs for my '83 SC 3.0L US spec.
As I understand it, I need the following: 1) SSI thick flange with outside taper 2) Oil line 911-107-729-10-M127 (cars with a front-mounted cooler) 3) Oil line 911-107-739-10-M127 Have I got it right? Anything I'm missing? |
Thick wallet and a source that has them in stock? Word is, they are rather scarce and pricey due to the sale to Dansk.
Maybe that has changed....good luck. |
You'll want an O2 sensor bung for your 1983, but I heard they no longer offer this. You may need to have it welded in.
I found the "hoop" oil line that goes under the engine/trans hung down pretty low on my lowered 911, so I had a flex line custom made by an aircraft supply company that goes overtop the transmission. It was less expensive than the hoop line anyway. If you do this make sure you cover the flex line with a high temp insulation sleeve....first one I made melted on the heat exchanger and blew oil all over after about 1 year of use. Second version w/ the insulation has been fine for 10 years no problems. |
A 2-in-1-out muffler?

On the chemicals side, something to unfreeze the current hardware for disassembly (both chemical and heat) and lots of antisieze for reassembly. |

And a long Allen head tool that fits up through the heat exchanger holes to remove the exhaust nuts. I bought a couple exhaust studs, just in case.
And new hoses for your heat (I backdated my heat about 2 years before I bought my SSI's and reused my heater hoses). |

Mapp gas.....cherry red.....tighten and loosen, repeat.

new nuts and gaskets for the exhaust flanges.

I contacted Pelican yesterday as I had ordered mine for an 80SC Jan 22 and haven't received them or heard anything. They are checking for me. I'm not too worried but would like to know something.
1:1 ATF and acetone seem to be working. My 911 only has 67K miles but they are 32 years old. I can get all of the nuts back and forth a small amount after drowning them for 5 days. Oxy acetelyne should finish the job. Acetone does not stink as bad as PB blaster IMHO/ |
Start storing up cuss words, I ran out when doing mine.

Thanks, guys. I was going to do this down the road, but with the news that SSI was bought by Dansk I thought I should go ahead. I've been crazy busy at work so I haven't had time to pull the trigger until now. Maybe I waited too long. I was looking at our host's website and assuming that since it didn't say "not available", it was actually available. So, lesson learned...
I'm going to replicate Craig_D's setup. Dual magnaflow cat's and exhaust. 2in/2out. Will weld in a bung for the O2 sensor. Probably will do a wideband AFR gauge with narrowband output while I'm at it. |
Just talked to Pelican and it looks like unless you have a source there is no guarantee that any ones that are ordered from this point forward will be "original" SSIs or made by Dansk. I'm told they are using the same tooling, ergo the quality will be the same as long as they use the same steel. I suppose the quality of the welding could be different. Apparently Dansk is not quite ready for the sudden upsurge in demand so no idea on how long it could take to actually get them.
So the grey market for these things is exploding right now I guess. Give up on Wall St and gold trading. Go buy some SSIs and stock pile 'em. |

What Dansk will produce will not be an exact to the original SSI's..
John Daniels is not going to have "someone" replicate his art work to the exact specs, just common business sense. ;) |
I must say , as the the last known pair sits on my loungeroom floor awaiting installation , the workmanship is incredible and it's a damn shame they will end up hidden under the car. Whoever takes this on at Dansk has a tough act to follow.

I run 993 HEs on my 3.6. There are a few people on the list that have jigs so you can reset the flanges.
With the price of HEs going up I predict the practice will get common. http://www.early911sregistry.org/forums/showthread.php?80167-SSI-Headers-Sold-going-to-EU http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1360309024.jpg |
Based on this thread I've just pulled the finger out and ordered a set of SSIs! Been prevaricating for the last 12 months, this has convinced me. Probably pick up a Monty to match, being in Oz and all. How 'much' louder is a 2in 1out Monty vs the standard banana muffler? 10%? 50%
