Valve issue or carb related?

A couple months ago I purchased a '75 911 targa. It has had the CIS removed and a set of weber 40's installed somewhere in its life time. I have put about 1,000 miles on it- and recently it has started backfiring or "popping" out of the carbs at low rpms like when taking off from a start. Could this be clogged jet?

Most likely a clogged idle jet. If the car hasn't been driven much lately, there could be debris or gas residue in the system causing the clogging.

Yup. This is most likely your issue. Pull each jet and look for debris clogging it up. Takes a few min

Clogged idle jet most likely as per above. See "Sources of Debris in Float Wells" on my web page:
