69 911s Electronic Ignition Conversion
I'm trying to get some advice on the wiring for converting from points to electronic ignition. The installation instructions just say to remove the wire from the points and install the red and black wires from the electronic ignition to the coil. I tried that and now have no power to the coil. What do I need to do with the wire that came from the points and connected to the CDI box. Thanks in advance.

You need to put the original coil wires back to normal, then connect the black wire of the new electronic unit to the original points wires and then run a switched hot (red) from the CDI power supply or other switched 12v power source to the red wire of the electronic points.

Thanks for the advice. I think i'm going to keep the points for now. I am still not able to get power to the coil though. Can anyone tell me where the red wire on the + side of the coil goes? I know that the blue/green one goes from the + side to terminal A of the CDI box. I tried my CDI box and it works on my buddies 911, so that is not the issue. I also installed new points and the ohm meter verifies it's operation. Thanks for the help

With a CD ignition the voltage applied the coil only lasts for a few milliseconds and thus cannot be "measured" except with an O'scope

Yes, but I was using a test light and able to see that it was producing spark. On my car I am not getting that.

Thanks Al. I think the problem may be the red wire with a white stripe that you can see in the picture I initially posted. From the diagram I see one that goes to the tach, but it shouldn't be at that location. Any thoughts?

Here is the same area from the '69 wiring diagram. definitely different than the '71.
![]() SL33 is the factory drawing you need. http://early911nzdownloads.yolasite.com/electrical.php Blue/Yellow and Red/White both go to the + terminal of the coil if that helps you? Red/White also goes to the center terminal of the Switching SCR (item 10) ![]()

Yeah, the '69 is a very unique beast compared to all the other years...

I found the issue, bad coil. Apparently in this setup there will not be power to the coil if it is bad. I don't understand why, but it's running great now. First start was a success! Thanks for all the help guys

Tachometer issues with Pertronix
I recently installed the Pertronix Ignitor and coil on my '69 911 just as was recommended in this thread. The car runs great, but now the tachometer is reading about 2 times the actual RPM and bounces around quite a bit some of the time. The coil is wired exactly like the original one, the Ignitor red wire goes to the switched 12V, and the black goes to the original black points wire. No other changes were made, but the tach has gone nuts! Any ideas will be appreciated!

Check battery voltage when running to make sure it is charging correctly. You may have knocked a wire loose on the VR, or it is beginning to fail.
