AEM - your opinions please
hi, I've launched my car with MS2, but was not satisfied with result
![]() , so now got AEM 30-1902U lying around, I know that using motec would be much better, but my budget is too tight. Just wanted to to hear your opinions and recommendations about this ecu. |

Bisimoto Engineering are experts when it comes to AEM Electronics. Their staff have been a great help with my project and shared a wonderful deal on a few electronics I was in need off!

You need to find a good tuner...Motec is $$$$$ I was just lucky that my car came with it.

just cause your car comes with a motec doesn't mean its properly tuned

I agree with Blackbyrd, tuning is the key to the success of any project.

Here we have only few guys that work with ems. here we have a motec guru that deals with a wide range of cars - from twinturbo lambos in Russia to wrc rally teams, but he works only with Motec. I was only afraid about the unit I chose. I have heard many bad stories about burned aem units with fatal results to the engine.

Many tuners don't want to touch systems like MS or Vems, with good reason, but a developed mature system should not be a problem. I'm using Emerald on my car which has worked really good for me, stable, good functions , easy to work with and its been around for as long as Motec.

Why do you say tuners don't want to touch MS? Only reason I got from one is he simply didn't think that MS users could afford to pay to get tuned since the goal of MS is to be dirt cheap.

You can make big power with AEM.... I have never had one on a Porsche, but I have had one on a Lancer Evo 8, and an SRT Dodge. With a good tuner, as others have stated, the systems are great, and are very adaptable.
The only bad part of AEM is when the ems fails, or needs updating, etc.... the waiting period to get the thing back can be ridiculous. 6 weeks sometimes.... Other than that, the piece is great! Hope this helps, let us know what Bisimoto replies with.

I was really surprised that someone answered me, got two answers from Bisimoto:
"Greetings Ornald, Thank you for your correspondence. I am an AEM distributor, and avid user. All of my Porsche 911 projects run the newer AEM EMS series 2 and Infinity boxes. I have used the 1900/1902U boxes in drag race personal projects in the early 2000s with success, however the drivers and boards are much older technology. The processor speeds are also a bit dated. I still have a very few clients who come to tune BMWs with them. I would highly suggest that you upgrade to an AEM Infinity EMS, and I can help you with that if you so desire. In regard to knock sensors, I have had excellent success with Toyota supra sensors for my projects. I hope that helps, and let me know if I can be of further assistance. Sincerely, 'Bisi Ezerioha" "The 30-1902U box is a great choice for your project and along with proper tuning, will allow for great drivability and of course performance. " Quote:

9 out of 10 times the MS customer is someone who has done everything himself and got stuck with a poor/no running engine. Too much sorting out to get working right. My tuner, who is an Emerald specialist, said that working with MS is like working with Emerald, 10-15 years ago.

MS requires specific experience and patience to work with it. Also much depends on how well it was assembled, as it is DIY unit. I know lots of guys running MS on turbocharged civic's and bmw's and miata's, but you have to have to go through lots of bugs. For example idle speed, knock sensor adjustment, wideband adjustment - I was told that there is no point to use wideband as it does not respond properly. Good point in this situation is that there is a huge amount of support information about MS on the net, but the main question is do you have enough time and knowledge to find right answers.

Yeah, if the DIY'er did something wrong, I could see why a tuner wouldn't want to bother.

Reliable power.

Ornald,
The AEM 1900 box will suffice, and has proven to be very reliable. I am also local to AEM, and the wait times for any updates exists in days, not weeks. Let me know your thoughts, and I would be more than honored to assist. bisi@bisimoto.com
