Targa Bar Repaint

Checking off the projects from this summer on our '78 SC Targa: new windshield and seal, complete interior re-do with switch from cork to black, new carpet, newly recoverd seats, recovered top from Dan Petchel, painted door covers, dash knee pads and rear seating area vinyl, new H4's, new Sucro relay, Optima battery (with Pelican cutting board) and new Blaupunkt radio.

Now I know what you guys meant about the cost of this addiction that I read about on my first week on this site last August! Thank God our first son has graduated from college and has a job!

Next on the list is the Targa bar re-paint. Going to go with a satin black, I believe. Has anyone got a similar "texture" to the paint on their bar? Don't know how well these pics do it justice, but the surface is almost what I would call "leatherette". It's very rough and bumpy. My first inclination is to use a sanding block and smooth it out as best I can, prime and repaint in the satin finish coat. The car paint job from the PO is not the best, so this is probably a temporary job at best.

Thanks for the help.

Mike

Mine is textured as well. I think it comes that way from the factory when it's painted. The stainless steel Targa bars are smooth.

Scott,

Thanks for the feedback Any others with similar texture? Looks like I should just clean the current surface, prime and repaint in black satin to maintain the textured factory look.

Thanks agian.

Nope, weren't textured by factory. Both mine have been smooth satin black. The 'Authenticity Series' books shows smooth satin black - no texture on any car.

I think yours was painted by a PO or a body shop, maybe that did those fake vinyl roofs. Maybe it's some kind of goop that adheres to stainless.

Interesting. I stand corrected.

Is it possible you could have it blasted and powder-coated black; or maybe even anodized? Just a thought...

If you can sand it off, you can repaint w/ RustOleum Satin Black #7777. It's a dead ringer for the factory satin black. Looks good. Durable, too.

tcar,

I'm thinking of sanding down the poor man's texture to a smooth base paint, then primer followed up by the RustOleum. Did you use a primer before applying the RustOleum? What type / brand?

I appreciate that sandblasting and powdercoat may be the ultimate treatment, but I feel the car may have a total repaint in the future (several years away, yet) and I'm just looking for a short term treatment with rattle can that will make the bar a bit more passable without removing the bar itself.

Mine's textured to, I don't know if this is how it ages or what, but I was going to use stripper, self etching primer and then Wurth satin black (because I have 8 cans left...

Post when you are done.

I've been reading a bunch of threads, and I'm not so sure that tcar is correct with regard to the texture. Most of the pictures I've seen of the original finish all have a slight texture to them. Many that have been refinished, however, have been done smooth. Do a search and draw your own conclusions.

Hawks,

You'd be better off powder-coating it if you can. I went down the rattle-can road with mine too, and it just won't last. Check this link:

Removing the targa bar?

I looked into this subject on the german forum before and found this link:

The official Porsche shop manual states that:

Or in english:
Primer, Filler and then underbody coating to give it it's texture.

So at least sometimes, texture was standard. Now i need an underbody coating that will look similar to "GLASURIT Unterbodenschutz schwarz 1109-1240/4" and that is available in the US in a rattle can.
Otherwise it is going to be RustOleum.

Frank

Mine is textured. I went over it with satin black and it turned out decent - kept the texture.

Mine is smooth but it's been repainted by PO.

Recall reading about Porsche coating the Targa bar with elastomer, so it's likely textured even after the elastomer flaked off.

Does anyone have close-up pics of an -original- Targa bar stipple texture finish?

Many years ago, a body shop refinished my Targa bar. But, they didn't or couldn't reproduce the stipple texture. Instead they smooth powder coated it. That's nice, but it's always bugged me. I'm finally wanting to restore the factory original look.

As I research paint shops, I need good photos to show as examples. I want to be sure they know what I'm asking for.

BTW, I searched the forum in many ways. There are a dozen or so threads. But I don't see any real solutions. The closest appears to be a textured powder coat. I did see the thread with the factory manual reference for refinish process. Sadly, I wonder if that's still possible since clamp-down on high VOC processes.

Had mine done years ago by powder coat shop. $225. Coating lasted several years (in Miami.) Toward the end, it wore out quickly. I DIY'd the next round. Stripped to bear metal with 120 grit 5" disk pad on a drill. Applied Cerakote's Black Velvet. Very nice finish but not black enough for my taste. Stripped Cera off to bear metal (120 again) and went a SprayMax 2k route. Primer. High gloss back. Then a clear satin. Purpose in this sequence was to get a deep black. Their high gloss black is a black-black. Clear satin worked to cut the high gloss back to a satin finish.

Worn powdercoat. Forgot exactly how long the powder lasted. Maybe 12 years.

Cerakote's Black Velvet is on cap. Is darkest of their current non-bake blacks. I think their bake blacks are a deeper black. Shaun at Tru6 does the baked Cerakote. Sample laid on top is the test card of the SprayMax sequence mentioned.

End finish of SprayMax sequence.

Tests done outside proved a bug / debris-free finish was impossible when shooting open air. A temporary tent was constructed. (A number versions were iterated to get it right. Final version included AC filters and an exhaust fan, and igloo-style "door.") Cerakote and SprayMax... both are nasty fumers. Appropriate breathing gear is essential.

When I first got mine in 2005 I considered repainting but in the end I stripped it - much better in stainless steel than paint and matches fuches
