steering wheel question

Hi guys, I need your thoughts about upgrading my steering wheel. I have still the stock steering wheel in olive green, as it is my interior color. Although it is more Grey than green.
I think I have 3 possibilities:

- buy a leather kit to renew it. Problem will I receive exactly the same green? Cost: almost 200 euro
- buy a black leather kit to renew. Will the 2-tone steering wheel be nice? (horn stays olive green) Cost: 80 euro
- buy a Momo prototipo. (Problem: convince my wife) Cost: 210 euro

This is a picture of the interior. (the picture is from the previous owner, the tree also )

My car is a 1987 Targa

I think option 3 would be appropriate if you add the cost of dinner with your wife
A black steering wheel would fit in very well !

Cheers !

You will also have the original wheel put away for future need. (sale, restoration, etc.) Always a good idea to retain all original pieces for the future on these fine cars.

Momo prototipo wheel, Early style plastic shift knob, and DON'T TELL THE WIFE, see if she notices. Maybe she'll by you one for Valentines day.

Nothing but the original wheel will look right in that car. By the way, the correct official color is Grey-Green, not olive green. Everything else is grey-green, so a black steering wheel would look out of place. Furthermore, I don't understand why you want to "upgrade". The stock steering wheel matches the interior perfectly and is higher quality than anything you will find in the aftermarket.

I have the same interior color and got the Momo Prototipo as an Xmas gift. Just didn't look right in the car. The brushed metal spokes and black rim were too much contrast to everything else. Way too Frankenstien for me so I returned it and got other parts I needed. Personally, I like the stock wheel.

Maybe I didn't expressed it very good. The leather is damaged to bad.

The colour is recognized as "donkelgrün-oliv" by a local leather dying company. And I beleive them, because I ordered already products in that colour and it matched very well.

That may be their name for it, but Porsche calls it Grey-Green. I have all the books and color swatches from that era to prove it.

Porschenut, I do not agree. The wheel that came with his car looks like a 944 wheel. And very skinny. Some aftermarket wheels look and feel far better. A good example would be the 930s wheel from Pelican. Fantastic quality and it does look correct because it was installed in the exact same interior in the 930. Black will go with everything. It cost a ton but well worth it.

I just had my stock Carrera steering wheel recovered. A company is Dallas did it for $300 and it looks perfect. They nailed the color, and the steering wheel looks and feels new. I guess sending it to Dallas TX is not an option for you.

Black Prototipo wrapped with dyed-to-match leather. Do it. Do it.

Remember, it is easier to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission.

"Honey, you know I would not have done it if I had known you'd get so upset."

Practice (a lot) in front of a mirror before you actually say this to your spouse.
Flowers, lots of flowers (dinner, wine chocolates.....), also help.

Happily married (to the same woman) for 37 long won-won-wonderful years - ;>)

I was never a fan of that "futuristic" wheel, so I'd vote for black leather Momo (prototipo, competition).

Maybe you can color match it with the purple air freshener...

I replaced my blue Carrera wheel (looks identical to yours but for the color) with a 930s wheel in black, which looks great to me. A color-matched Prototipo would be cool, I have to admit, and an idea I am going to file away for when all of my other higher-priority projects are done...

Disagreements are fine. There is no "right" opinion.
